George Burgess Obituary

Dr. George H. Burgess
December 16, 2021
Bradenton, Florida - Dr. George H. Burgess, age 73, passed away peacefully December 16, 2021, with his loving wife, Devony, by his side.
George was a giant of a man, in stature and in heart. He lived each day of life with integrity, love, passion and commitment. He was completely devoted to his family and his dental practice. His presence in the lives of all who knew him will never be forgotten and his absence will be felt every day.
George was born to George and Hulda (Harke) Burgess in Detroit, Michigan. After graduating from Grosse Pointe High School, George attended the University of Michigan, before graduating from the University of Florida. In 1975, he received his dental degree from the Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond, Virginia. He began his dental career as an associate in Plant City, Florida, where he met his future wife, Devony Smith. In 1978 he opened his private practice in Bradenton, Florida.
George was known for his quick wit, a sincere spirit and a gift of caring for others. For over 43 years, he cared for the patients of his dental practice and was honored to do so. He genuinely enjoyed the staff and colleagues he had the pleasure of working with over the years. Being a dentist was more than a profession to him, it was a way of life.
Dr. Burgess was a Life Member in the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association and the Manatee Dental Society (where he served as a past president). He was instrumental in the development of the Dental Hygiene Program at the State College of Florida, where he served on their board of advisors. He was especially fond of sharing his knowledge and mentoring others considering a future in dentistry.
George was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was extremely proud of his children and his grandchildren stole his heart. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing the backwaters of Florida and flyfishing the trout streams of North Georgia, his favorite place to relax. Family vacations held special memories and their love of Maine led to the family tradition of Maine lobster boils, for any occasion! George enjoyed training his labs, Rocky and Winnie, for hunting and forgave his final lab, Gordie, for not liking the water!
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 42 years, Devony; daughter, Katie (Jeff) Weihrauch of Katy, Texas; son, Andrew Burgess of Bradenton; 2 precious grandchildren; Adelynn Rose and James George Weihrauch.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00AM, Saturday, January 15 , 2022 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3200 Manatee Ave West, Bradenton, FL 34205.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Coastal Conservation Association Florida, PO Box 568886, Orlando, FL 32856 or Suncoast Waterkeeper, PO Box 1028, Sarasota, FL 34230. Condolences may be made to www.brownandsonsfuneral.com.

I just found out this sad news and my heart is broken. I was so lucky to find his office a few years ago when I moved to FL from MA. My experience with Dr. Burgess was by far the BEST! He had a kind and gentle soul and that shined through with his work. My sincere condolences to his family and to his staff (his other family). He will be so forever missed!

I was so sad to hear about Dr. Burgess. He was such a kind person and always had a big smile. I used to laugh to myself when he worked on my teeth because he would explain in such detail each step of the procedure and then would make the sound I would be hearing just so I would be comfortable. I will miss you, Dr. Burgess. We were all lucky to have known you. Much love to the family❤

Dr Burgess was our first and only dentist once we moved to Bradenton in 1980. We became patients about 1982 and remained till now. We felt he was the best and never wanted to leave his practice. The office personnel was awesome and like family. Once my husbands job took us to 2 other states, I refused to find a new dentist so I flew from Texas and Pennsylvania for my cleanings and any other dental work. So I consider myself his one loyal patient that traveled the farthest for an appointment! Once we returned to FL I was so happy to see him and Debbie plus the staff. I just felt he’d be here forever! He will be greatly missed ❤
Rest In Peace Dr Burgess..

My wife & I have been patients of Dr. Burgess since the early 80's. He had amazing skills & such a sense of humor. While doing an exam he noticed something he called a "FLT". When asked what that was he said a Funny Looking Thing. A great loss for our community. He left such a legacy! Sympathy to his family.

I had the privilege of working for Dr. Burgess for ten years as his front office manager. He taught me dentistry 101 and102 as I knew nothing about it when he hired me! I have continued my career in dentistry for 37 plus years and I owe my dental career to this exceptional doctor or “Dr. B” as we called him. He was a true gentle giant and always had a caring heart and a smile for his staff and patients. I have you to thank for the many years of continued friendship with our staff, Bev Bennett, Kimmy Jensen and Kim Magaldi and have reconnected with other staff including Nina Laginess. You will be dearly missed Dr. B.! I have left a donation to the Coastal Conservation Association in your honor. May you rest in peace knowing you have left behind a legacy as a great Boss, father, husband and friend. Sincerely,
Sue Messina

I first met George while playing with Devony in a volleyball league at GT Bray Park. He has been my dentist for over 35 years, and have never met a dentist with such skill and gentleness. I will miss our conversations about fishing. He was truly a gentle giant! He will be missed on so many levels. May the Holy Spirit give you comfort and peace.

Although I had only been a patient of Dr. Burgess's for a few years, I had the utmost respect for him as a dentist and a person. He had a way of explaining what procedures they were doing, why, and putting his patients at ease. Dr. Burgess will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

When Dr. Burgess was just establishing his practice in Bradenton, I was a newcomer to the area and noticed his ad in the local newspaper. I was with him ever since, more than 40 years. Recently, realizing he must be near retirement age, I told hygienist, Debbie, that I really wanted Dr. Burgess to do the one remaining crown I needed before he retired. She replied, “Oh, he’s not retiring any time soon. He loves his work!” What a disappointment to learn he retired due to health reasons! He was always so pleasant, gentle and careful to explain issues thoroughly. I appreciated him so much!
Sincere sympathy to his wife and family as well as his staff. May your faith in our risen Savior sustain you through your grieving.

Heartfelt Sympathy for Devony, Andrew and Katie at this "GREAT LOSS" of George (husband and father). My name is Barbara and I have known George and his Family for over 40 years (almost half my lifetime). My husband A.J. Ingle and I built not only homes for George and Devony but we "built a friendship" of great importance in our lives. Knowing George in many ways: yes, I was Patient #400 and received stellar dental care for many many years. A.J. and I fished with George and we all caught fish that day. I recall with much fondness when Katie and then Andrew joined the Burgess Family. So many MEMORIES -- So much LOVE -- So sad at this LOSS. Many will join with Devony and Family to treasure every memory of George Burgess -- the BEST OF THE BEST!!! Wishing Peace for those who mourn the loss of a very "Special Person". With love for the Family. Barbara
