Remembering Nanny
6/29/24 – 4/29/21, age 96
Where do you begin to celebrate nearly a century of life?!
Some of my best childhood memories are visiting my grandparents at Lake Naomi in the Poconos. I’d tag along with Nanny to her tennis matches, play catch with Poppy, we’d canoe around the lake and pick blueberries, eat the best grilled cheese sandwiches, and play hand & foot for hours every night.
Nanny volunteered at the Thrift Store in Florida for 17+ years. She accumulated thrift store finds all year and then wrapped them up at Christmas. We had so much fun opening the crazy treasures she picked out for each of us.
From houseboating on Lake Powell to Australia and NZ, cruising Alaska and the Caribbean and lots of sporting events in between, she never wanted to be left behind and was always up for an adventure.
She did the dab. She’d ride a wave-runner. She tucked the hair behind my ear so it wasn’t in my eyes. She grimaced and yelled when we did taco tongues. She loved wine, french fries and pie. She hated rice. She was a whiz at multiplication tables and would give Blake a run for his money. She’d sing Rufus Rastas. She’d send cards with $1 or $2 tucked inside. She gasped when we told her Kenz was selling GS cookies for $4 per boxshe sold them for only 25 cents a box. She had at least 3 pairs of earrings for every outfit. She loved puzzles. She hated wearing that DAMN mask. She loved animals. She loved bingo – and always had a stash of winnings in her walker (usually chocolates). She loved Dan’s red shoes and Blake’s orange/blue hair. She loved having her nails painted, esp in colors to match the season. Last week, I painted her nails blue because that’s her favorite color.
Nanny was colorful, spunky, spirited, full of smiles, told it like it was, a little sassy and made friends with everyone. I hope I age with her positive outlook and attitude.
Reflecting on all these memories has filled me with gratitude. I’m so grateful for all the wonderful memories of her throughout my life, that my kids got to know their GREAT grandmother, and especially that I was with her in her final hours – telling her stories, holding her hand, and brushing the hair from her eyes.
While my heart is heavy, there is solace knowing she is at peace.
A toast to you, Nanny! I love you and will miss you terribly. XOXO Krissy (your favorite, and only grand-daughter)
