Robert B. Counterman

1929 - 2016

87, of Edison, passed peacefully on Monday, March 28, 2016 at the Roosevelt Care Center in Edison. He was born in Perth Amboy, graduated from Woodbridge High School, with the Class of 1946, had resided in Edison since 1958, and had a second residence in Bradenton, FL. He was a Korean War Veteran, serving with the U.S. Air Force, as a Dental Tech and First Class Airman, from 1951 to 1954 stationed in France and Germany. He retired in 1987 from the Shell Oil Co. in Sewaren after 40 years as a Lab Technician, where he also was a member of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union, Local # 8-800. Robert was a member and head usher at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Edison, and volunteered in the Church Thrift Store for over 25 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1000 in Trenton, the VFW Post 15031 in Trenton, American Legion Post 471 in Iselin and the VFW Post 3117 in Edison. He also belonged to the Cadillac-LaSalle Old Car Club's Valley Forge and Raritan River Regions. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy (Gazda) Counterman, who died in 2008, his parents Samuel L. and Lucile Counterman and his step mother Virginia, his sister and brother-in-law, Alma and Frank Zavodsky, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; Mary and George Niskach, Helen and Frank Schreiner, Elizabeth Gazda and Irene Gazda. He leaves behind, his two sons; Russell of New Orleans and John of East Brunswick, his daughter Barbara, and her husband, Anthony Sanchez, of Elgin, Il, his grandson, Julian, his sister and brother-in -law, Marilyn and Edward Kerly of Tampa, FL, and his brother-in-law, John Gazda of Metuchen, along with his many beloved nieces and nephews, who affectionately called him "Uncle Bob" and his "Sweetheart" in Florida, Janis Koch currently of Bonita Springs. Visitation will be on Friday, April 1, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m., at the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave. Fords, NJ 08863. Funeral services will begin on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 9:30 a.m. from the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, followed by a 10 a.m. Funeral Service at Wesley United Methodist Church, 5053 Woodbridge Ave., Edison, NJ 08837. Interment will follow in Clover Leaf Memorial Park Cemetery, Woodbridge.
