Ann Rhoades Obituary

ERIE - Ann (Ives) Phillips Rhoades, 100, passed away Tuesday (April 15, 2025).
She was born in Lewis Run on Nov. 2, 1924, a daughter of the late Howard Ives Sr. and Katherine (Gaetana Tortis) Pelino Ives.
Ann graduated from Bradford Senior High School in 1942, Edinboro State Teachers College in 1945 and taught for three years at Beaty Junior High School in Warren. Ann joined Zippo Manufacturing in 1951 as an artist. "Annie" thrived at designing artwork for lighters. After 36 enjoyable years, she retired as head of the art department in 1987. She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Bradford.
In addition to her loving husband of 44 years, Gerald "Gerry" B. Rhoades, Ann was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward J. Phillips Jr.; two sisters, Florence "Flo" (Sam) Langianese and Anntoinette (Lou) Valentine; four brothers, Walter (Madeline) Pelino, Anthony "Tony" Pelino, Dominic Pelino and Howard (Sylvia) Ives Jr.; daughter, Amy Malara; and granddaughter, Amanda Pearce.
Surviving are daughters Marsha Phillips and Susan (the late Ralph) Pearce; a son, John (Lynn) Rhoades; and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ann was a loving, devoted and nurturing wife, mother and friend. Always with a smile on her face and kind words. She saw good in everyone. Growing up in Lewis Run, she had a happy childhood. Annie still talked fondly and often of her years at Zippo Manufacturing, a "wonderful place to work." Her love of art showed up in many places: family dinners she prepared, the pride she took in her gardening, even her appearance and style of clothes she'd wear. Playing cards, bingo and working crossword puzzles were among her favorite pastimes. Ann loved all God's creation, including the many pets (and strays) she cared for over the years. Such a social person, Ann truly saw the world through rose-colored glasses. She brought passion and enthusiasm to all life's challenges. Annie will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. God bless and rest in peace.
Special thanks to all the staff at St. Mary's for taking such good care of Annie. There will be no viewing.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary's at Asbury Ridge, 4855 W. Ridge Road, Erie, PA 16506; St. Bernard Catholic Church, 95 E. Corydon St., Bradford, PA 16701; or any animal shelter or sanctuary, especially EARS or Therapy Dogs United of Erie or the SPCA in Bradford.

My very sincere condolences to Annie´s family.
She was such a wonderful lady and Zippo was so fortunate to have her as one of our employees. I remember her well in speaking about my grandfather, GG BLAISDELL, and how much she admired him during her years at the company.
I personally had such a respect and an appreciation and a lovely relationship with Annie over the years. What a Great Great Lady she was.
Again please accept My Sincere Condolences for your loss.
