Blaine Puller Obituary

SMETHPORT - Blaine A. Puller, 74, of Smethport passed away Tuesday (May 28, 2024).
He was born May 18, 1950, in Bradford, son of Francis and Gloria (Means) Puller. His grandparents were Ralph and Almena (Woodring) Means and Glassell and Helen (Kelly) Puller. Blaine married Donna Stevenson on June 9, 1973, in DuBois.
Blaine was a graduate of Smethport High School, Class of 1968, and earned a bachelor's degree in forestry at Penn State in 1972. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter, loved Willys Jeeps and was passionate about riding his Harley. During his career he worked for 32 years for Kane Hardwood Division of Collins Pine. Throughout his life and career he was committed to doing the best for the land long term, balanced with the rights and desires of the landowners and being fair to all who worked on any given project. He measured wealth in spending time with family and leaving a legacy of kindness, hard work and integrity.
Blaine was a member of the Society of American Foresters, McKean County Conservation District, Allegheny Hardwood Utilization Group, McKean County Historical Society and Norwich Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Blaine's family includes his daughter, Jessica (Darrell) Ward of Yorktown, Ind., and their children, Eva and Rachel; his son, Justin (Karyn) Puller of Edinboro and their children, Wynn, Alanna, Ainsley and Silas. He is also survived by a brother, Roy (Jodi) Puller of Williamsport.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond (Gail) Puller of Brookville.
Family will schedule a celebration of his life at a date to be announced later. Memorials may be given to Norwich Township Fire Department, McKean County Historical Society or a charity of the donor's choice. He will be buried in Maplehurst Cemetery in Hinsdale, N.Y.

Every year in the '90s I would testify before the Pennsylvania Game Commission,
pleading for hunting regulations that would increase deer harvest and reduce deer
density and impact on forest resources. I was always intimidated by the rowdy and
angry hunters who wanted more deer, rather than fewer. However, I made sure I was flanked by Blaine and Ken Kane when I went to testify - these two gentle giants of the forest industry were well-regarded and respected for their knowledgable and even-handed views on deer and forest management and gave me an umbrella of security. I and many others often called on Blaine for his experience and views - one time when I was presiding over a group presentation on deer and forest management at a national wildlife society conference Blaine drove all the way (to Nashville) on his Harley (of course) to give supportive testimony. I miss him, his knowledge, his easy laugh, and friendship.

Blaine was a true and learned friend of all forest resources and the people who managed them. I enjoyed working with him on deer-forest issues and had immense respect for his commitment, knowledge, and contributions.

Diane and I are so saddened by this news. Blaine's family were wonderful neighbors for many years. We enjoyed the times as our young families grew and the activities we shared. Blaine brought me so much joy as he shared his love for hunting with black powder rifles. We hope your family can also share the memories with laughter as well as the tears.

I am sorry to hear this sad news, Blaine was my forester when I started in the logging industry with Kane Hardwoods and he always treated me with respect and as an peer even though I was a 20 year old green horn. Up until the last time I saw him he was always friendly and had a story to share . I will miss that. RIP Blaine

Met Blaine early in 1970. He was with his grandfather, in a Willys jeep. He was a good man. Was always doing things for others AND the environment.
