Daniel James O'Brien, a devoted family man and proud U.S. Navy veteran, passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2025, at the age of 89.
Born March 13, 1936, in Salamanca, N.Y., he was the son of James O'Brien and Margaret McMahon O'Brien. In his early days, Daniel played in a local softball league and showcased his skills on the high school basketball team, specializing in the two-hand set shot. His love for sports extended to skiing at his grandparents' farm in Hinsdale during his childhood. He was a 1954 graduate of Bradford Area High School.
Daniel enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1954 and served his country with honor aboard the USS Ranger. Daniel served in the Navy until 1958 when he was honorably discharged. He then settled in Bradford, to start a family with his beloved wife, Sandra.
A dedicated salesman throughout his career, Daniel worked tirelessly in various roles, from delivering Bunny Bread to serving as a milkman for Bradco Milk Co. and later as a Keebler salesman.
Beyond his professional life, Daniel had a passion for gardening that blossomed into an award-winning garden in Bradford. His garden became a local attraction, visited by numerous enthusiasts and clubs. He took great pride in his koi pond and the whimsical presence of garden gnomes.
An active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Bradford, Daniel's faith was a cornerstone of his life. His involvement in the church community enriched the lives of those around him.
However, Daniel's most enduring legacy is his devotion to his wife, Sandra. Their marriage of more than 60 years was a testament to a love that withstood the test of time. The passing of his beloved wife in 2020 deeply impacted Daniel, highlighting the profound connection they shared.
Surviving are one daughter, Susan (Jay) Koniak of Salamanca, and three sons, Timothy (Nancy) O'Brien of Jamestown, N.Y., Thomas (Terrie) O'Brien of Bradford and Daniel O'Brien of Charlotte, N.C. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Morgan (Amy) O'Brien, Taylor (Gina) O'Brien, Amanda (Randall) Emborsky, Megan (Randy) Dalaba, Emily Koniak, Timothy O'Brien Jr., Kaitilin O'Brien, Michael (Madai) O'Brien and Anna O'Brien; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Daniel James O'Brien leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication and joy. His memory will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to be touched by his warmth, devotion and kindness.
Family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 27, 2025) at St. Bernard Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will immediately follow with the Rev. Jim Gutting as celebrant. Military honors by the U.S. Navy and Honor Guard of American Legion Post 108 of Bradford will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery.
