Peter Whelan Obituary

Dr. Peter George Whelan, 71, of Bradford, passed away Friday (April 14, 2023).
Born on July 4, 1951, in Bradford, Peter was the son of the late Dr. Paul Joseph Whelan Sr. and Kathryn Mary (Mackowski).
He was a 1969 graduate of Bradford Area High School. After attaining a Bachelor of Science degree, Pete continued his education and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry in 1977 where he earned a degree of Doctor of Medical Dentistry.
Pete returned to Bradford to practice with his father and brother, Dr. Paul Whelan Jr. After his father's retirement in 1987, Pete continued Whelan Dental Associates of Bradford, until 2022. In retirement he continued to provide dental care at the Marienville Prison.
He was an active member of the American Dental Society and St. Bernard Church.
Our beloved brother and uncle lived life to the fullest. He loved the outdoors. You could always find him riding his motorcycle, on his boat, swimming, fishing, playing basketball or just enjoying life. There isn't a family member or friend that doesn't have a great story to share about Pete "Doc." He was kind, humble and had a gentle soul. We will remember and celebrate him, especially every year on the Fourth of July, Pete's birthday. We know he will be there in spirit.
Words cannot begin to express what Pete meant to his family or to his many, many friends. Our hearts are broken, and our lives will never be the same without him.
Surviving are three brothers: William (Amelia) Whelan of Eagle, Idaho, David (Lois) Whelan of Bradford, and Thomas Whelan of Lewis Run; and seven sisters: Maureen (Michael) Goodman of Ashville, N.Y., Katherine (Peter) Casartelli of Penfield, N.Y., Anne Fair of Georgetown, Texas, Denise (Stephen) Housler of Bradford, Joan (Robert) Carloni of Charleston, W.Va., Susan (Thomas) Morris of Bradford, and Patricia (Thomas) Lorenzo of Fairport, N.Y.
Pete was an amazing uncle to 31 nieces and nephews as well as 24 grandnieces and grandnephews. He had the gift of making all of them feel so special and loved; they cherished and adored their Uncle Pete.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, John J. Whelan, Dr. Paul Whelan Jr., and Francis J. Whelan. Our family is a testament to the life and love bestowed upon us by our amazing parents, Dr. Paul and Kathryn Whelan.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, April 23, 2023, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc., 372 E. Main St.
A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held with the Rev. Jim Gutting as celebrant. Christian Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery.
Donations may be made in honor of Dr. Peter Whelan to the Tuna Valley Trail Association, P.O. Box 1003, Bradford PA 16701, a place he loved to spend time.

To the Whelan family. I'm so sorry to hear about Pete. He was a good friend. I had alot of good memories of Pete. I know that he loved Pitt, so one of my favorite memories was that we used to lift weights at his house and i gave him the nick name "Fralic" used to put a huge smile on his face. Dr. Pete was our Bradford dentist for 17 years. So kind and gentle. After all that time we became friends chatting about motorcycles, nephews, outdoors and so much more. Once, When I passed out in the dental chair, he had to walk outside and regroup. He was patient with silly me. We will miss you, Pete. God bless your family that you loved.
