Dee-Dee and Family,
So sorry to hear about Doc, we will miss him greatly. Thank you all for "sharing" him with us all these years when he would come out at anytime to save our horses or dogs. Thank you for Bridget our beautiful English Setter that he gave to us, because"the boys need a pup". We still have her and cherish her. Working for Doc was the best job I have ever had, The Broodmares, stud colts and foals were such an inspiration and I learned so much. Doc saved my horses on many occassions when no one else could, he will always be the best Vet ever and we will never forget his kind words, smile, great sense of humor and his way of telling you the hard truth when we needed to hear it concerning the animals. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I first saw Lindy when I was about 12 years old when he came to the stables at Sunset Hill House, hopped on to a horse that no one could ride and off he went... It is a lasting impression of over 62 years!
He was my vet for dogs and horses and was always supportive of the White Mt. Animal League here in Sugar Hill, NH. He did work at many of our low cost Rabies Clinics.
The picture is of Lindy with two volunteers at one of the clinics.
I can't think of anyone who has been a part of my life as long as Albert Grass DVM. RIP my friend.
Surely he is on the back or behind a horse at the Rainbow Bridge, happy and well.
My deepest sympathy and love to you DeeDee, you made him happy, loving horses as much as he did.

I am so sorry to learn of the passing of Doc Grass. I first met him when I moved to Ma. in 1985 and needed a vet for my broodmares and resultant foals. I always enjoyed his colorful stories and his vast practical knowledge of horses. I am so sorry for his family in their time of loss, but Doc will never be forgotten.

Deirdre, this is the e mail I put out to the office;
Deirdre has lost the best husband and friend that anyone could ever hope for as her husband AL Grass passed away this past Saturday evening. She explained to me today that he did not want any calling hours and his immediate family will say their final goodbye to him this weekend when he will return to Sugar Hill New Hampshire, his special place. Deirdre will appreciate the privacy we give her during this sad time.

I met Al when I moved to Brattleboro about 26 years ago and I was told that he was the best horse vet around. That was true in every way and more importantly he was a great friend who was always ready to help others any time of day and for any reason, whether it was vet work or not and whether it made sense or not. He was always gracious to everyone.

Al would come to give my horses their spring vacinations and tell me to be sure I held them still for the shot. While the horses were freaking out at the sight of him with the needle I would tell him that the horses weighed 1000 lbs and I weighed only about 105 and how did he expect me to hold them still. He would then grab the horse's halter, hold it still with one hand and give it the shot with his other hand all by himself. I could always count on him to get the job done.

I remember him telling me a story once about a vet call he got from a woman who was all upset because her horse was standing out in the field in the rain shivering. He said he asked her if she had a barn and she said yes she did. He said he told her "Well then bring it in out of the rain and dry it off ".

He talked to me alot about how much he loved Deirdre and how lucky he was to convince her to marry him. She is very lucky as well to have had such a devoted husband and all of the Vermont horses and horse owners who he cared for were lucky to have the best vet I have met yet in Vermont.

Bill & Jeff,

My condolences on the passing of your Father. No matter the circumstances, it is never easy to lose someone and when it is someone like your Father that makes it doubly difficult. I am sure that you both remember all of the good times you spent with your Father at the Fairs and those memories surely must make me you smile especially with your interaction with all of those race horse characters and their stoic old Vermonter ways! I wish you and your Families all the best in a difficult time! Best regards, Craig Birchard
