Alphonse Doucette Obituary
Larry Doucette, 55, passed away at his home on March 12, 2021 after a courageous and uncomplaining battle with brain cancer (Glioblastoma).
Larry was born in Bangor, ME on June 27, 1965 to Joseph and Marlene (Sullivan) Doucette. He graduated from Orono High School in 1983 and the University of Maine at Orono in 1996 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Following graduation he and his wife, Christina (Fortier) Doucette moved to Ashford, CT where Larry spent a few years working for the State of CT. In 1998 they moved to Dummerston, VT where they lived and raised their two children, Madison and Joshua for the next 22 years. During that time Larry worked at Vermont Yankee in a job he often said was the best job he ever had.
Larry was a member of the Dummerston Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years. Larry was always helping or volunteering and it's impossible to list them all but you would see him filling the fire pit at the Harris Hill ski jump, lending a hand at the Touch-A-Truck event at BMH, collecting groceries for Project Feed the Thousands or building houses for Habitat for Humanity. He was a frequent face for events at the Dummerston School with his children and after Joshua was 3 and both kids were on the ice you could always find Larry at the Brattleboro skating rink.
Larry's love for hockey was infectious and soon the whole family was hooked. Away games were never too far, early practices were worth getting up for and summer camps were all about more ice time. Larry was either on the ice helping at practice, in the box or moving the nets during games as the kids grew up playing with the Brattleboro Hockey Association and later BUHS hockey. Larry was the first parent to say yes whether it was splattering bedroom walls with paint, building a paintball field in the woods by the house (Christina was the only one ever shot in the eye) and of course anything on 2 wheels was fair game.
Larry took Josh on his first long-distance motorcycle trip when Josh was 9 to a track in NJ and as they drove through the night and Josh started to fall asleep Larry wrapped his belt around the two of them so Josh couldn't fall off and rode one-handed. He was a gifted rider on two wheels but just as good on one.
In 2016 Larry's career brought him to Wiscasset, ME where he was happy to be back in his home state working in a job he described as even better than the best job he ever had. Larry worked at Maine Yankee, a nuclear spent-fuel storage facility until his passing.
Larry is survived by his wife, Christina of Wiscasset, their children Madison and Joshua, his mother Marlene Doucette of Orono, sisters Bethany Carpenter of Ohio, Cheryl Piper (and brother-in-law Terry) of Hamden, Jolene Wilson of Florida, Darylann Doucette of Florida, brother William of Old Town, 8 nieces and nephews along with an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, both sets of grandparents and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A scholarship has been established at Larry's request for a high school student not based on grades but the merit of being a hard worker, helping others and being a good person. If you wish, donations can be made out to "Orono High School" and mailed to OHS 14 Goodridge Drive Orono, ME 04473 for the Class of 1983/Doucette Keep Smiling Scholarship.
A celebration of life will be held in June in Wiscasset, ME and details will be provided when they are available.
