Ardice Clark Obituary

VERNON -- Ardice Taylor Clark, 89, of Vernon Green, Greenway Drive, died Monday afternoon, Sept. 11, 2006, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 17, 1917 in Greenfield, Mass., the daughter of the late Prentiss Willard Taylor and Madelon Merchant Temple.

She was a lifelong resident of Hinsdale, N.H., and a graduate of Hinsdale High School; the eighth generation of Taylors to reside in her hometown.

On Aug. 20, 1942, she married Earl Anson Clark. He would cut the first rose that bloomed every summer from her grandmother's rose bush, and give it to his wife as a token of his love.

As the wife of an avid outdoorsman, Mrs. Clark had many interesting adventures in the wilderness of Canada and locally, enduring everything from bears to mice to make sure her husband was happy.

Together, they ran Taylor Hardware and Plumbing and Temple Insurance Agency for many years in downtown Hinsdale. The Clarks stayed devoted to each other for 57 years, until Mr. Clark's death in 1999.

Throughout Mrs. Clark's life, she gained strength from her faith and gave willingly to all those around her. Family always came first. She had a natural gift for nurturing both her relatives and friends.

The family fondly remembers her for the comfortable, loving environment she provided, whether for her weekly Scrabble games or Sunday suppers.

Christmases were a particularly happy time in her household, with lots of family gathered around her table indulging in her famous chicken divan and homemade cherry cheesecake. Mrs. Clark loved the ocean, often making trips cross state to her family's traditional summer vacation spot at York Beach, Maine.

Through the tough times in her life, Mrs. Clark found solace and strength in her deep faith. A devout Christian, she was a member of the First Congregational Church in Hinsdale for more than 75 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Earline Ardice Nixon, of Hinsdale; her sisters, Miriam Madelon Brown of Keene, N.H., Sally Beauchesne of Keene, N.H., and Natalie Dutton of Kingston, N.H.; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Aguirre Nixon of Hinsdale and Christopher Clark Nixon of San Diego, Calif.; her great-grandchild Araceli Ardice Aguirre of Hinsdale; and numerous loving and well-loved nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. The funeral service will take place Saturday at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church on Main Street in Hinsdale.

Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Millstream Community Center in Hinsdale.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to either The First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 22, Hinsdale, NH 03451, or Rescue Inc., P.O. Box 593, Brattleboro, VT 05301.
