Clayton Cutting Obituary

GUILFORD -- Clayton Lewis Cutting, 81, of Guilford, died at home on Dec. 4, 2006.

He was born in Guilford, on Aug. 3, 1925, to Leon Lewis and Mabel Ellen (Woodard) Cutting.

He attended the Wellman one-room school on Sweet Pond Road and Brattleboro High School.

Mr. Cutting was the superintendent of the Guilford Fair horse draw from its inception until 2001. He was a longtime president of the Fair Association, which has since named a building after him and established the Clayton Cutting Good Sportsmanship Award.

He married the former Doris Antoinette Phelps, who survives, on Aug. 4, 1946, in Greenfield, Mass. They were married on a Sunday, as that was the best day of the week for the farmers to take a day off. The Cuttings celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family picnic in August.

Dear Doris,
Clayton was a very special man and the head of a very special family. On our trips to Vermont, Soon-Young and I always looked forward to seeing his smiling face and catching up on his often humorous interpretation of the local news. His help and kindness--and indeed the kindness of all the Cutting family--will always be a cherished memory.

The Cutting Family,
I am so sorry to here about Clayton's passing. He was my bus driver when I was young and I went to school with Kristy and Kyle. Clayton was a charming man with an easy and open smile. My Father died Christmas day 2004 and I can image that he and Clayton are having coffee together and talking about old times. My best to all.

Doris and your entire family,
I am very sorry to hear on Clayton's passing. Of course one of my fondest memories was the big smile and "hello" he gave me ever morning when he picked me up for school. He was a great bus driver. I also enjoyed talking with him every year at the Guilford Fair. He will be miss by all and remembered by everyone who knew him. You and your entire family are in my thoughts and prayers. Just think now he, Harvey and Emery are having their own town meetings in heaven.

Lots of Love to you all,

Tami
