George S. Bevis of E Dummerston, VT passed away on May 18th, 2025, in the presence of family after a time of declining health.
George, better known as Steve, was born June 18th, 1929, in Chesterfield, NH, to Shirley G. and Esther (Darling) Bevis. He was a graduate of Brattleboro High School, class of 1948. He lived in Chesterfield & Hinsdale, NH, as well as Brattleboro and E. Dummerston, VT.
Steve started and ended his working career at the Exxon Station, formally known as the Esso, D & D Service Center in Brattleboro, VT. His employment started at the age of 15 until his high school graduation when he enlisted into the United States Marine Corps unbeknownst to his family. He entered the Marine Corps on October 20th, 1948, were he proudly served just shy of 4 years during the Korean Conflict and was honorable discharged on June 1st of 1952 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon his discharge, Steve returned to Brattleboro, VT and the ESSO station. Over the years he worked as an attendant, mechanic, manager and then co-owner until its sale in 1985 to the State of Vermont. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed helping others; whether it was to drive them to an appointment, pick up medicine, snow blow driveways or pick something up at the local store; it didn't matter to him, he was happy to help. An avid animal lover, he was always with a dog. The last dog he had at the service center was his beloved Penny, a Doberman Pinscher, while the last dog he had at home was Danny Boy, a Lhasa Apso.
He was a Life member of The American Legion, Post #5 and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #1034.
He is survived by his daughters, Tani (James) Wallace of Summerfield, FL, Wendy Pritting (David Bristol) of Dummerston, VT, Darcy Emery (Jock Harvey) of Andover, VT and Bridget (Randy) Bokum of East Dummerston, VT; sons, Steven (Jay) Bevis of Harmony, ME and Michael Bevis of Glover, VT; as well as ten grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one more on the way.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Chester, Harry and David Bevis; both his sisters, Dorothea Temple and Ann Lavalla; as well as two grandsons, Connor and Aaron Clough.

In keeping with his wishes, graveside committal services with military honors will be conducted on May 31st, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in the family plot in Chesterfield West Cemetery on Poor Rd., in Chesterfield, NH. A social gathering will follow at the VFW, 1034 Black Mountain Rd., Brattleboro, VT.
