Gordy was one of a kind. He touched the lives of many people in a positive and enduring way. He is one of those people who made my life richer and left an enduring impact to this day. I know he is missed by so many of us.

Gordy- Like Peg, I think of you whenever i watch the weather on the news. So often I know that you would have a more accurate forecast and I miss having the chance to talk with you about it. I visited your farm home twice and really enjoyed hiking around it with you. Rest in peace, love brother Jim

You are in my thoughts every day, Gord, as I check the daily weather reports, watch space ships landing in outer space, connect with your family (virtually, during this worldwide COVID pandemic), watch Lauren go off to school on my Frameo device, enjoy the NC gardening seasons, remember the beauty of snowy Michigan winters, and ponder life after death. Love you to pieces, my little bro!

I first met Gordy in 1989 at the Hanscom AFB Weather Program Office. He and I started the VSAT program and traveled all over the world briefing MAJCOMs, performing site surveys, etc. I will never forget his great sense of humor and to date wonder if he was serious or just pulling our leg. For example, during a business trip to Hawaii, we were given a tour of the PACAF Headquarter's Building, which is an impressive historic building. The interior has dozens of modern offices for many PACAF personnel. The exterior of the building was sprayed with bullets during the Japaneese Pearl Harbor attack and to date, these distinctive markings still exist all over the building. Our guide was a USAF colonel and with emotion in his voice explained details of the Pearl Harbor attack and how the building was spraid with bullets and bombs, and how many people were injured and killed. For a moment there was silence and all of a sudden Gordy says "That's truly amazing! All those bullets and not one broken window". The colonel was so surprized by Gordy's comment and with a concerned lokk in his face asked if Gordy was driving the rental car back to the hotel.
Gordy my wife Anna and I will miss your sincerity, your hospitality, your generosity, your talent to make people feel comfortable, your patience, your zest for life, and last but by no means least your ability to put a smile on everyone's face, especially when one was having a bad day. It truly was an honor to know you, and as Bob Hope used to say, "Thanks for the great memories"!

I met Gordy when we were both in 6th grade in Amerman Elementary School in Northville. He was sweet and funny and a good friend to me. We used to exchange little "love notes". I anticipated arriving at school to find a surprise in my desk from him. I always looked up to see if he was sitting in the balcony at First Presbyterian church in Lansing on Sunday mornings when I was singing in the choir. He escorted me to the Junior and Senior proms. He was funny and sweet. I will miss him in this world, but know that he is happy in the next. God bless you Gordy

I was so fortunate to work with Gordy in my years at Hanscom ; although my time at Hanscom was relatively short, I feel I have known Gordy all my life. That is the way he made everyone feel. When I first started at the Weather office he put me at ease and welcomed me. Gordy was more than a co-worker, he was a friend. I will never forget how he made work a pleasurable experience and how he made others laugh. I will never forget how he opened up his home for the annual picnic. I will never forget going to Sox and Celts games with him, some of the best times of my life. I miss my friend…I will never forget my friend. Gordy, see you on the other side.

I've had the privilege of working on the weather team since 2004. Although never working directly with Gordy, he was one of the first people to introduce himself and make me feel welcome. I learned quickly that "everyone" had Gordy stories, and while most were humorous, all eluded to what a kind, caring, humble man Gordy was. He loved his family, loved his farm, promoted Red Sox Baseball, and was always willing to lend words of advice and encouragement - most coming at just the time you needed them most. He was a fixture in our office and whenever I brought my two girls by work, they'd always ask if "Gordy" was in, and if they could stop by to say hi. Knowing how badly I wanted to take my girls to a Sox game - Gordy worked his magic with the tickets and made it happen.....that's what he did - helped others, without a second thought. What a wonderful world this would be, if more people lived by those type values. May his family find comfort and cherish their memories of him. God Bless.

Gordy was a great man, a wonderful friend and I am so grateful to of know him.
My first few summers as a member of the Weather family were highlighted by Gordy and Nancy hosting the whole gang up at their Vermont farm. Thank you for those memories.
I’ll miss Gordy and all his animated discussions about “It’s Over” for the Red Sox; his youngest "kids" Peppermint, Patty and Patience; global warming (true or false?) and about life in general.
I am better for knowing him… and for having him as a friend. Rest in peace Gordy. We will miss you!

Gordy was a great friend and co-worker, and I am grateful to have worked closely with him during my time at Hanscom. He was kind and an all-around fun person. I will always be thankful for the ways the Lord used him to bless me and so many others during Gordy's many years of faithful service.

My deepest condolences to Gordy's loved ones. My family lived behind the Hammonds in Northville and Gordy and I spent many a day playing in the fields and pond and getting into trouble. How sweet were those fondly remembered days. In college, I met Karen Hammond and became reacquainted with Gordy and his girls Tammy and Tonya. My heart goes out to you and your siblings. The loss of a father is heart-breaking. Nancy, I am so sorry for your loss. And, Peggy, Jim and Eddie my loving thoughts are with you too.

Gordy and I were “cube neighbors” in the Weather Program Office at Hanscom AFB. He was a wonderful neighbor and fantastic human being. I especially enjoyed hearing him tell about the happenings in the farm during the weekend. It was obvious he loved his farm and especially his sheep peppermint, Patti and Patience. I think I heard their life histories from the time they first arrived at the farm until later on. I remember Gordy talking about planning a pond and then working with Farmer Norm to dig it. He told many stories of the animals and birds that came to the pond.
I learned early on that it was impossible for Gordy to answer “yes” or “no” when I asked if it was going to snow. Instead he would launch into a detailed discussion of why and how the weather was shaping up. His explanations of were always interesting and informative. I caught on very quickly to be prepared for a detailed discussion. It was obvious that he had a vast knowledge of and a tremendous enthusiasm for meteorology. He was my weatherman.
I have warmhearted memories of the Weather Systems Annual Picnic at the Farm in July 2008. The weather was perfect, the food delicious, great people attended and, especially, we couldn’t have asked for better hosts.

Nancy & Family -- Dave and I have known you and Gordy for several years. We are very saddened by Gordy's passing. This world was a much better place with Gordy in it. I had the pleasure of working with Gordy from 1998 to 2002 at Hanscom AFB and a friend ever since. Whether it was discussing the Red Sox, the next big snowstorm or life on the farm, Gordy always had a twinkle in his eye that made you feel good about things.
Gordy was always vigilant in identifying those early signs of a developing snowstorm and then scouring the BUFKIT data to identify that pesky rain-snow line. E-mails would start fly and next thing you know you’re involved into a “virtual metcon” with various folks voicing an opinion. In the end there always seemed to be good rationale why the farm was going to be the bulls-eye for max snow.
Gordy had a profound effect in transforming me from a smug “dreaded-hated” Yankee fan when I first arrived to ESC into a rabid Red Sox fan. I fondly remember attended the 2004 ALDS between the Red Sox and Angels with Gordy and Warren and experiencing David Ortiz hit a series-winning walk-off home run in the 10th. Needless to say we were all ecstatic and none more than Gordy.
God bless my friend, you were one of the good people in life and I thankful for your friendship.

I was truly blessed to cross paths with Gordy. What an incredible professional and man. He was always pleasant and I really appreciated him openning up his home to me and my family when we visited his farm. He was passionate about the Weather, the Sox and had a heart of gold. We shared many interests and he would bring magazines and books for me to read, and I really appreciated his kindness. A small example of his generous spirit. I hope to emulate that spirit of giving someday. Thank you Gordy for helping me to grow. You are one of the finest people I will ever know. Thanks Gordy for everything.

Gordie was a true professional who's pleasant demeanor was very conforting. As a Program Manager of several weather acquisition programs at Hanscom AFB I often visited Air Weather Serivce (AWS) at Scott AFB to participate in meetings, briefings, etc. It was there that I first met Gordie who struct me as a very alert and highly dedicated individual. I admired his inquisitive attitude about the details of each program and his determination to see that the AWS system preformance requirements were being met. Later, after his retirement from the military, I was again fortunate to work with Gordie at Hanscom AFB as a team member in developing and fielding weather systems around the globe. He was an amazing person who's kindness and friendship will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

I first met Gordy in 2006 after he returned from Rotator Cuff surgery. We used to kid with him that his pitching days were over. Soon, Gordy and I worked side-by-side on testing and fielding weather systems. We loved to rant about the Sox and discuss differing views on Global Warming. I had pleasure of viewing his gorgeous farm when I helped him with the garage one day. The world couln't have known a warmer, kinder man. I wish Gordy well for the rest of eternity...you will be missed.

My greatest sympathy goes to Gordy's family and friends. He was never seen without a smile around here (Hanscom) and was always that calm in the center of any storm that encouraged everyone to be the best they could be. Gordy, you will be sorely missed around here.

Gordie and I met while I was working Certification and Accredition (C&A) activities for the Weather SPO at Hanscom AFB in 2006. Gordie was a driving force and a jovial spirit. I will always remember our spirited banter by his cube on a number of topics. Although I only spent a couple of years in the Weather Office, his friendship has lasted until this day and will continue to last until we meet again in the great beyond...

Gordy was special; one of a kind; honestly loved by all who had the pleasure, privilege and good fortune to know him. He was a true ispiration to the many young folks he mentored; and a person genuinely revered and admired by his peers and "old" friends. His unrelenting work ethic; unparalleled professionalism; unyielding devotion to country; unsurpassed love for family and friends; basic kindness, abundant generosity and extreme passion for anything "Red Sox" will be fondly, fondly remembered and sincerely, sincerely missed. I was most privileged to have worked as an enlisted forecaster under Gordy Hammond, the commander and Air Force Weather officer. He was a model commander and officer in every respect that I can think of. In the early 1990s I was fortunate to renew my relationship with Gordy as we both worked to successfully deploy and field the Automated Weather Distribution System (AWDS) around the world. It was during this period of time that I became friends with Gordy and had the opportunity to get to know Gordy, the man. My life is much richer as a result of meeting Gordy in life and will forever remember him. My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Gordy's lovely wife and best friend, Nancy, and his eight children.

I first knew Gordie at Plattsburgh AFB, NY...truly a weather nightmare on many occasions. I recall once I asked him about a forecast for later in the day, a Friday, about the flying weather forecast. He looked up at me and said, "You don't really want the truth, do you? Get 'em home...EARLY."
Ran across him again at Hanscom AFB and just loved his friendship, sense of humor, and e-mails of impending weather doom. A terrific guy, greatly missed, who has "gone West.".

I was stationed with Gordy as a young captain at AF Geophysics Lab in the mid 80s. When I got orders for an unaccompanied assignment to Shemya AFB, Alaska, Gordy was very helpful to me since he'd done a remote tour earlier in his career. I never forgot the advice and encouragement he gave me, and I always looked forward to seeing him when I visited "happy Hanscom" in the years following my assignment there. Gordy, rest in peace, my friend; you were taken from us way too soon.

I worked with Gordy at the Air Force Geophysics Lab at Hanscom AFB before he retired from the Air Force. I remember him fondly as sharp, knowledgeable, focused, even-tempered, and always ready to do what's right. I hope that your memories of him will be a blessing for you.

I had the pleasure of working with Gordy at Hanscom. When I think of Gordy, what comes to mind for me is a warm and caring man who was always smiling and laughing, who loved his place in Vermont, and was dedicated to the Air Force mission. He is missed by many. The world was a better place because he was in it, and the world is worse off now that he is no longer here with us. Rest in peace Gordy and I will see you again my friend.

It's hard to put into words and even harder to sum up in just a few words how great a man Gordy was. I knew him as a very kind, supportive, and loving father, husband, and friend to many close loved ones in my life. He has taught me so much throughout the years and has been there for me through thick and thin. I'm so glad he finally found his way to our little family in NH and became a father to me. I love you with all my heart and hope to see you again in the future. xoxo

I had the privilege of sharing many classrooms with Gordy in high school. His fun loving attitude made many dull class periods pass quickly. We all share your joyous memories and sorrow.

I'll never forget the 4th of July we were having a family reunion and Gordy licked his pointer finger and held it up and said"It's gonna rain in an hour", we all thought BS... but sure enough in 1 hour it poured rain. The fireworks were delayed but the show went on.

Gordy and I worked together for the last 20 years in weather systems, where I was often on the receiving end of Gordy's weather forecasts. We claimed he used only the "Gordy Forecasts Snow" model, because he always forecast the most snow he could.
Gordy made everyone feel like they were his closest, best friend. He loved the farm in Guilford and regularly had the whole office out to farm for the annual Gordy picnic. He was missed when he retired last year, and now he will be greatly missed. R21.4 - Warren
