Grace Adam Obituary

Brattleboro - Grace Beverly Adam of Brattleboro died on November 24, 2016.

She was born at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital on January 16, 1991, and was a lifelong resident here. She was educated at Green St. School, BAMS and BUHS, and attended college classes at the University of Maine and Greenfield Community College.

Grace had a love of the outdoors which began early, in her enjoyment of the Whetstone Brook that flows by the house she grew up in. She was an avid snowboarder, hiker, and rock climber. Her real passion was for travel; she journeyed to China on a high school trip, and visited Japan in 2009 as a Freeman scholar with the Experiment in International Living. With her generous smile, upbeat energy, and unforgettable sense of humor, she made friends easily on these travels-- both among her group members and especially with the people she met in these countries.

After high school Grace travelled in Europe with close friends from Brooklyn, NY. Grace was also a WOOF'er: with WorldWide Opportunities on Organic Farms, she went twice on her own to Hawaii to learn about landscape and culture and indigenous health practices. With her parents, Grace traveled from the desert in California to the Old City in Cartagena, Columbia. Her love of travel and of meeting new people was a hallmark of Grace's personality. She will be remembered by these people, and by all those who loved her, for the way she could put anyone at ease with her smile, and then move things along with her contagious sense of wonder and enthusiasm for life.

Grace is survived by her parents, Marcia Olander and Drew Adam, her brother Max Adam and wife Hannah Richards of Greenfield, Massachusetts, and their children Sina and Julian. She will be missed by her sister and soulmate Ida Adam, also of Brattleboro, and Ida's partner Misha Mross of Spofford, New Hampshire.

Grace is also survived by her maternal grandmother Beverly Major King of Concord, MA, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends scattered about the U.S.

SERVICES: A memorial service will be held at the Vermont Jazz Center at Cotton Mill Hill on Saturday, December 3, from 7 to 9 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her name to the Experiment in International Living at 1 Kipling Rd., PO Box 676, Brattleboro, VT 05302 or to the Center for Health and Learning at 28 Vernon St., Suite 319, Brattleboro, VT 05301.

Dear Drew,

I can't tell you how shocked I was when I read the news. The death of your child, especially in this way, I know is devastating. I just want to send as much love as I can. You have been a very special person in my life.

Words feel profoundly inadequate in the face of such a tragic loss. Our love and deepest sympathies go out to the entire Olander & Adam family. Though we met her but briefly, it was clear that Grace was aptly named. Certainly her beautiful spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
