Leonard was a true gentleman Vermonter and "they don't make 'em like him anymore." He joined the Marines at age 17 during WWII, and served his country as a combat engineer in four major campaigns: Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. I met him late in his life, but found he had grown up knowing my grandparents, and had even played baseball with my grandfather for the Williamsville team in the old West River Valley League. I am very sorry for his loss, glad to have had him as a friend and admire his amazing work ethic and unselfish service to his country. I apologize for entering these words so long after his passing, but I only found out about his death today.

I am so sorry for your loss, Leonard and my dad (Frank Johnson) were friends when they worked together at Smeads Lumber. The last time that Dad saw Leonard was when Dad was a pt at Grace Cottage about five years ago. Leonard stopped in to visit. That was the highlight of Dad's day. Dad passed a few months later.. My thoughts are with you all. It is a difficult time. I hope that as time passes, you will be able to remember Leonard with smiles and not sadness. Peace be with you all.

Leonard was a wonderful cousin and high school classmate of mine. His service in the Marines during WWII and Korea (though I did not know about his service in Korea at the time) made me proud as I was of all my cousins and brothers who served our country in those difficult times. I too served in the Navy during both wars. Leonard was a devoted husband to Mary and father to his children. I shall miss his letters and our infrequent meetings. Rest in peace.

Richard & I extend our deepest sympathy. He was one of the greatest generation. Many times, we would celebrate our wedding anniversaries together.

My thoughts and prayers are with each of the children of Uncle Leonard. I am the daughter of George "Bob" Temple, Anita Warren. I enjoyed reading a letter he wrote only a few weeks before he passed on. I would love to get a copy of the obituary for my Dad.
