Margaret Gorman Obituary
WILMINGTON -- Margaret “Peg” N. Gorman, 73, a resident of Haystack Road in Wilmington, died on Thursday morning, Nov. 27, 2003, at her residence, following a brief illness.
She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Nov. 26, 1930, the daughter of Wallace Hunter and Margaret Alisha (Atwell) Nichols. She is a graduate of Shaker Heights High School in the Class of 1949 and she also attended the University of Chicago.
On March 7,1953, she married Jeremy Gorman in Cleveland, Ohio.
They spent many years in Simsbury, Conn., and Middlebury, Conn., before moving to Wilmington 11 years ago. While living in Wilmington, she operated her own knitwear design business from her home.
Mrs. Gorman was very involved in several organizations over the years. She was a former president of the League of Woman Voters in Simsbury, and operated the Valley Net Children's Shelter in Simsbury, serving Simsbury, Avon, Farmington and Canton areas. Mrs. Gorman was a founder and member of the Professional Knitwear Designers Guild and a member of the National Needlework Association.
After moving to Vermont she continued to be involved in her community. She was a board member of the Colebrook Fire District in Wilmington, and volunteered on the Windham County Diversion Board.
Mrs. Gorman volunteered at the Deerfield Valley Health Center Art on the Mountain program for many years. She was an avid skier, and enjoyed dry flower arranging. She developed a technique for drying small flowers and using them in dollhouse designs.
She and her husband also have been foster parents to 57 children over the years.
Survivors besides her husband and the foster children include one son, Jeremy Gorman Jr., of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Wallace H. Nichols Jr., of North Carolina and Florida; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, Christopher.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Margaret “Peg” N. Gorman, 73, of Wilmington, died on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at her residence, following a brief illness.
She is survived by two granddaughters, Daphne Gorman and Miranda Gorman, both of San Jose, Calif.
Services will be held at a time to be announced by the COVEY& ALLEN FUNERAL HOME.
There are no calling hours scheduled. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.
