Mary Angell Obituary

WILMINGTON -- Mary Anne Katherine (Kennedy) Angell, 75, of Smith Road, died in an automobile accident on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003.

She was born May 17, 1928, in New York City and graduated from Hunter College High School there. A recipient of a Bausch & Lomb Scholarship, she received her bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester and a master's degree in zoology from Columbia University. She was a longtime resident of Mamaroneck, N.Y., before retiring to Wilmington. She worked for IBM for more than 30 years including three years in Paris as a telecommunications consultant before retiring in 1988 to travel extensively throughout the world with her husband.

Married on July 28, 1951, to Bob Angell of Wilmington, she was his beloved wife for over 52 years.

During all of her travels, Mary Anne supported her husband's extensive photographic pursuits as they recorded people, cultures, and nature throughout the world. She loved wildlife and exploring the far corners of the world. Her travels included more than five extensive summers volunteering for the Alaska Parks Department, five trips to Antarctica, motorcycle trips throughout continental Europe and the United States, the Far and Middle East, Russia, Asia, Africa, South America, and New Zealand.

She was a veteran of numerous offshore ocean races including the Newport-Bermuda Race, as well as extensive sailboat cruising with her family. She was an active member of the Vermont Bishop's Commission on Women and the Parish Council at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Wilmington. She was a member of the Brattleboro chapter of the American Association of University Women. She was a trustee of the Wilmington Historical Society and Founding Secretary of the Reade Wildlife Sanctuary in Rye, N.Y.

She had zest for life and an intellectual curiosity that only grew over time. In addition to her devotion to her husband and family, she had many lifelong passions including foreign languages, crossword puzzles, the New Yorker Magazine, cooking, all kinds of reading and community volunteer work. In addition to her husband, she is survived by their four children, Kathryn A. Angell of Concord, Mass., Marilyn Borst of Mamaroneck, Bobbi Angell of Marlboro, and Chuck Angell of West Greenwich, R.I.; and five grandchildren, as well as her sister, Joan Stout, of New York City.
