Matthew Cochran Obituary

Matthew L. Cochran

1979 - 2016 Matthew Lee Cochran was born on August 13, 1979, in Brattleboro, Vermont. A resident of Prescott, Arizona, he died in a work-related accident on July 25, 2016. Matt was one of a kind. An indomitable spirit with unwavering honesty, he was a teacher to us all. He was a man of wonderfully contrasting qualities: gentle yet determined; loving yet independent; stoic yet vulnerable. Matt was a straight talker. He could distill a situation into its very essence in just a few words, popping out phrases that were funny, poignant and pointed. An active member of AA, Matt just celebrated his 13th year of sobriety, bringing to his community his wit, wisdom, and steady support for others in recovery. On his own journey, he learned to recognize and accept both his strengths and his weaknesses. Traditional academics were difficult for Matt. But by the sheer force of his determination and with the support of educators who honored his way of learning, Matt excelled. He graduated from BUHS in 1998, and from Prescott College in 2013. Matt was loved deeply. His circle of friends was ever growing. A vast community of all ages and backgrounds cherished Matt's company and learned from his unique way of being in the world. He is survived by his parents, Lorni and Jock Cochran, his siblings, Jamie Motum, Liza Cochran, and Jones Cochran, and a wide circle of family and friends. He'll be remembered by all who knew him for his wisdom, humor, and loyalty. May those qualities live on in each of us. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 5pm on Thursday, August 4th, at the Cochran home in Guilford, Vermont. A potluck dinner will follow. Gifts in Matt's memory can be made out to "One in Ten"a memorial foundation being created in Matt's name to support people in recovery. I had only met matt about 2 years ago. We met in prescott playing hockey and he wasnt the most skilled player but it was always so fun to watch him play because he gave everything he had each time he was on the rink. He was willing to learn as he was playing, with a smile on his face the entire time. He celebrated when someone did well, and he was able to laugh when he turned into the butt of jokes. The one memory in particular that stands out was him taking a puck to his skate boot. A pretty normal occurance for anyone who plays hockey. Sometimes you just have to get in the way. But suddenly we hear "i can see my toes!" The boot had decided to break into pieces. Hockey humor. You had to be there, but at the time it was hilarious.
In the short time i knew him, i watched him try to be a positive energy at all times. Im 100% positive i speak for the entire PYHA when i say it was always a pleasure to sit on the bench with him, to share the rink with him, to be around him. I can only imagine that you are up there with #11 and the two of you are putting up goals like noone's buisiness bud.

I lived with Matt about 3 yrs ago. I will miss him so much. We had so many laughs together, and we enjoyed talking about the Redsox. He was very kind and loved his family very much.
