Philander Packard Obituary

Philander O. Packard 1926-2008 BRATTLEBORO Philander Olin, "Phil" Packard, 81, of Clark Avenue, died Sunday night; March 30, 2008 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H, with his daughter at his side. Mr. Packard was born in Hinsdale on April 23, 1926, son of Stephen E. and Lucy O. Eagles Packard. He was raised and educated in Hinsdale attending Hinsdale High School. A veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, he proudly served his country in the Navy enlisting in August of 1944 until being discharged in June 1946, stationed in the Asiatic/Pacific Theater of Operation. He later reenlisted and served another eight years stateside until his honorable discharged from the service in Feb. 1954. He had been employed as a mail clerk for the Postal Service working in the Brattleboro Post Office retiring on January 3, 1986 following 26 years of faithful service with the post office. Previously he had been employed as a painter working for Herman Hertzberg, worked as a section hand for the Boston & Maine Railroad and during his younger years was employed at the White-Washburn Paper Co. in Hinsdale. He was a 60 year member and past commander of The American Legion, Brattleboro Post #5. He enjoyed his 39 years as a Little league Coach and Umpire when the program was under the 40 and 8, a branch of the American legion. He was a fan of American legion Baseball and was very involved with the team of the year and was Athletic Officer. During his service as Legion Commander he was involved with Boy Scout Troop 405. For three years he served as County Commander for the American Legion Dept. of Vt. Mr. Packard was also a member of the V.F.W., Carl M. Dessaint Post #1034, and held membership in the B.P.O. Elks, Brattleboro Lodge #1499. He also was a volunteer for RSVP in Brattleboro for several years. With his wife, he was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brattleboro. On April 23, 1955, at First United Methodist Church he was married to Beverely Ingalls who he leaves. Besides his wife of 52 years he leaves, one daughter, Diane L. Packard of Westminster West, one son, Douglas P. Packard and wife Sally of Guilford, one brother, Stanley E. Packard of Hinsdale and a sister, Mary E. Coulombe of Brattleboro, four grandchildren, Jeremiah Packard, Jason Packard ,Justin Packard and Amber Packard who held a special place in Grampa's heart. Additionally he leaves five great grandchildren, Victoria Packard, Gabriel Szappano, Kassidy Packard, Riley Packard and Justin Packard, Jr., and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Stephen E. Packard, Sr., and three half sisters, Verna Boardman, Lois Cousins and Leona Young. FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside committal services with full military honors will be conducted in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery on Orchard Street at a later date to be announced by the funeral home. There are no calling hours scheduled. Memorial contributions in Mr. Packard's name may be made to; Trustees, First United Methodist Church, 18 Town Crier Drive, Brattleboro, VT. 05301.
