Richard McGinn Obituary

Richard C. McGinn (Dick), MD, age 75, died unexpectedly on August 29, 2022 at the Franklin Medical Center after a brief illness. Dick is survived by his wife, Mary (Rupprecht) whom he married on June 10, 1967 and sons Ryan of Greenfield and Ian (Katie) of Marietta GA and grandchildren Nolan and Ellery. He is also survived by his sister Constance (Bruce Thomas) McGinn, of Conway, MA and brother Dana (Kate) of Keene, NH, David (Marci) of Danville, VT, as well a niece and several nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Viola (Chase) McGinn and sisters Catherine and Virginia.

Born in Portsmouth, NH on September 16, 1946, Dick was raised in Brattleboro, VT, graduating from Brattleboro Union High in 1964. He then graduated from Williams College in 1968 and the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1972. He completed a residency in OB/GYN and a fellowship in GYN Oncology at Yale New Haven Hospital. He then served in the United States Air Force at Kessler AFB in Mississippi and Elmendorf AFB in Alaska, achieving a rank of Lt. Colonel. In 1980, he moved to Bernardston, Massachusetts and established his busy, solo practice in OB/GYN with satellite offices in Athol and Brattleboro. Later in life, he practiced general medicine in Greenfield.

Dick had a wide range of interests and pursuits. While in college during the Civil Rights era, he went to Mississippi to rebuild burned out churches. He and Mary lovingly restored the 1745 Ryther House in Bernardston and filled it with antiques. From his Air Force experience, he learned to fly both fixed wings and helicopters. He also enjoyed cars and motorcycles and took a course at Skip Barber's Racing School. Scuba diving was another passion and he earned Master level certification. He was widely read and a scholar on Robert Frost. Most recently, he immersed himself in classes at Greenfield Community College and developed an interest in photography.

To those who knew him, he was a complex man, generous to a fault, intellectually curious, had a wonderful sense of humor and known to do the unexpected. He faced his adversities with equanimity. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

Per his request, there will be no service. To send condolences, please visit Smith Kelleher Funeral Home.

Just learned of this. I have fond memories of Dick and all the family at Camp Spofford back in the `50s.

I´m a year late seeing this. I have missed him since moving away from New England. Whenever I think of wonderful doctors he comes to mind immediately. So kind and understanding always. He helped me through some tough times and I will always be grateful for knowing him. I do have a good doctor here in Central Florida but not like Dick. I hope you rest in peace as you so deserve.

Great guy a year ahead of me at Williams. Used to go to his apartment and Mary Lou fed me more than once. Remember thumbing down to Waubeeka Springs for golf and good times. Funny, kind, always figured he would make a great and compassionate doc.

I only knew Dr McGinn as my opthomologist. At the lowest point of my life and at age 37, I found myself in need of unexpected eye surgery. Dr. McGinn's kindnesses smoothed what could have been a rough part of an already hard time.

We were surely lucky to know Dr. McGinn and be among his patients. When I was very sick with Lyme meningitis, he he traded his services for raspberry preserves. He had a soft spot in his heart for farmers, and we are so grateful.

I met DIck years ago at his home in Bernardston, Massachusetts because I was friends with his mother Rusty McGinn. Every time I see "McGinn" I think of Rusty and what an amazing family she raised. Everyone, I think, entered a helping profession/medical. A testament to her own commitment to the medical fields. RIP Dick. You had a lovely home in Bernardston and a stellar career. I treasure having had your brother, Dana as my family and personal Opthamologist for many decades. Rev. Thomas L Shanklin

I attended Brattleboro High School with Dick and Mary Lou and both were significant contributors to the positive atmosphere of our school community that provided a lifetime of wonderful memories for us all. Classmates help shape our character and outlook on life and both added their personal touch to the students and friends they encountered and I'm sure continued such throughout his life. The class of '64 is saddened and all feel grateful for Dick's contribution to our lives!

He was my favorite doctor ever, so nice, calm and supportive, helping me through some tough times in my life. A dear sweet man, not just my doc but a friend who I think of often. I´m sad that we won´t run into each other in bigy parking lot to gab about what´s going on.
Condolences to his family, he´ll be missed.
