Thomas G. Fahner

1956 - 2015 WESTMINSTER Thomas G. Fahner, 58 passed away peacefully at his home at Kurn Hattin Homes on Jan. 6, 2015, surrounded by his family, after a strong three-year battle with cancer. He was born in Queens, NY, on May 8, 1956 to Dorothy and Andrew Fahner. Tom spent his childhood years playing in the Great South Bay in East Islip, NY, where he graduated high school and met many of his lifelong friends. He received his BA in physical education from SUNY Brockport in 1978, where he also met his wife. He then continued his education, receiving his Masters in School Administration from Springfield College in 1980. Tom believed that every child deserved a childhood and began a long career of community service to children in Vermont. In 1980 he began his career at Austine School for the Deaf in Brattleboro. In 1990 he joined New England Kurn Hattin Homes for Children in Westminster, VT and served for 25 years as Principal and the Director of Residential and Educational Services. In 2009, he was named Middle School Principal of the year for the State of Vermont. Tom loved his family dearly and he bettered the lives of everyone around him. Outside of work, Tom was an avid hiker, skier, tennis player, and dedicated basketball coach. He remained active in the community as a Rotarian, a member and former president of the NFCCE for over twenty years, and served as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Tom was a trusted and beloved mentor to many. Throughout his life, he had an incredibly strong Catholic faith and enjoyed being a lector at Saint Charles Church in Bellows Falls, VT. He was predeceased by his mother Dorothy. He leaves his wife of 34 years, Donna (Niebuhr), three children, Kelly Fahner and her fiance, Brendan McArdle of Manhattan, NY, Kim O'Connor and her husband, LT Timothy O'Connor of Annapolis, MD, and Christopher Fahner and his wife, Lynsey (Nally) Fahner of Boston, MA; his father, Andrew Fahner, stepmother, Thea; two brothers, Robert and his wife, Terry, and Steven and his wife, Cindy, as well as nine nieces and nephews. Tom was especially proud he got to meet his new granddaughter, Maggie O'Connor born December 17. This is very late-just found out that my friend, Tom, has passed away.
Tom, Donna, and I graduated from Brockport State College together. We were in the P.E. department and hung around together. So much fun!
Tom was so full of life and had a positive outlook on everything! He was a good man and friend and always called me by my full name-Robin Diane Marie Parillo.
After graduation, life happened, so T, D, and I lost touch, but we were "always friends" and never forgot each other in our hearts. I regret not seeing T and D and not keeping in touch.
I am so deeply sorry D, to hear of Tom's passing. I know he was your best friend, a great husband, father and friend.
Much Love to you and your family-Robin Diane Marie Parillo Miron

He hired me as the evening nurse in the infirmary in order to give care to these children after dinner. I send my sincere condolences to his wife Donna and his entire family. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this painful time. Barbara West

January 10, 2015

Dear Donna and Family,

I am sorry to have heard this news and to have missed the services for Tom. As the former Principal at Saxtons River Elementary and The Grammar School in Putney, I would cross paths with Tom periodically. I always admired him greatly for his wonderful work for the children of Kurn Hattin and his dedication to his community and church.
My wife and I would like to extend our deepest sympathy, yet celebrate and will always remember his amazing gifts and the legacy he has left behind.

Sincerely, Steve and Nancie Lorenz, Chester, VT.

Dearest Donna,
I send my love and my deepest condolences. You and your family are in my thoughts. Though I did not have many occasions to talk with Tom, when I did I felt his kindness. Since Tom and I did similar work, we chatted on a few occasions about being teachers and principals. I only needed to be in coversation with Tom for a few minutes to know how completely dedicated he was to his students. He was possessing of tremendous generousity of spirit and no doubt had a deeply positive impact in his work and on those in his personal life. Your friend always, Karen Sullivan (New York, New York)

Our deepest condolences to the Fahner family. Although, I personally have only met Mr. Fahner at the wedding of his wonderful son, Chris, to my (equally wonderful) cousin, Lynsey, I can tell you he was a kind, loving and nurturing man. His spirit definitely lives on through his three children and I'm sure the future generations as well.

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

With much love and support,
Christine, Dan, JoHanna & Ronan Ragan
