Doris Kirkland Obituary

Doris Kirkland July 16, 1922 - June 17, 2025 Memorial service for Doris "Ninnie" Kirkland, 102, of Breckenridge, formerly of Lamesa was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, Northside Baptist Church with her grandson, Kevin Kirkland officiating and Pastor Keith Clower assisting. Visitation followed the service. Viewings were held from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Branon Funeral Home.

Doris, the best bare-footed crappie fisherman in the world, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 17, surrounded by her family. Ninnie was a month shy of turning 103. She married George W. Kirkland on July 20, 1940; they were married for 73 years.

She was the perfect example of a life well lived. If you ever stepped foot in her house, you were leaving with a jar of canned jelly, soup or green beans. If she heard of a friend expecting a baby, she would crochet you an afghan crafted with love. And you were definitely getting homemade potholders as well. When visiting her, better bring your appetite, because all the meals prepared by her were huge from start to finish. Her specialties were a pot of red beans and cornbread, her homemade biscuits or her banana pudding and sometimes a German chocolate cake. We will all miss you Ninnie. Get your cane pole, some minnows, and a tootsie roll pop and rest easy until we see you again.

Doris is survived by her children, Sam Kirkland and wife, Carolyn of Lubbock, Bettie Branham of Lamesa, Bruce Kirkland and wife, D'Lynn of Lamesa and daughter in law, Laverda Kirkland of Lubbock; 15 grandchildren and spouses; 33 great-grandchildren and spouses; and eight great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, George W. Kirkland; sons, George H. Kirkland and David Ray Kirkland; grandson, Charles Wayne Kirkland, son-in-law Clay Branham; three great-grandchildren, Sarah Kirkland, Kolby Huckert and Kase Kirkland; and grandson-in-law, Michael O'Brien; and four brothers and one sister.
