Deacon David Arling, serving at Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Broomfield, passed into his new birth on January 1, 2024, the feast day of Mary the Mother of God. Deacon David had a deep devotion to Our Lady, and had said that he hoped to pass on one of her feast days, so it was a consolation to his heartbroken family that Our Lady came for him on that day. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Marianne, three children, Lisa Cadwallader, John Arling, and Michael (wife Jena) Arling, and two grandchildren, Neva and Joey Cadwallader. Deacon David had been a member of Nativity Parish since moving to Broomfield in 2007. He served in many volunteer ministries and was ordained a deacon and assigned to his home parish in 2017. As a Deacon, besides serving in masses and with baptisms and funerals, he served in Prison Ministry, Ministry to Assisted Living Facilties, Divorce Ministry, and Study Groups. He loved his diaconate, especially giving homilies. He was a natural teacher. Deacon David was born in
Dayton, Ohio in 1946 to parents Joseph Arling and Mary Servaites. He attended Catholic schools, and entered minor seminary for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, and earned his Bachelors degree in Scholastic Philosophy from the Athenaeum of Ohio. He studied for a masters in Divinity at St. Louis University and earned a MA in English. He worked for many years in Catholic ministries. His was a life of service to God's little ones. He served as Director of Religious Education, in Troy Ohio, as Pastoral Associate at St. Pius X Parish in Pueblo CO, and worked for the Catholic Crosswinds Diocesan Newspaper in Pueblo for seven years. He also worked for fifteen years teaching English in youth corrections systems for the State of Colorado. He taught as an adjunct professor for Regis College for several state prisons in the Pueblo Canon City area. He stated, " I am grateful for the opportunities I have had as a role model to young people serving time in correctional facilities, hopefully making a difference." He served in prison ministry for many years both in Pueblo and in Broomfield and Denver. He was a wonderful family man. He raised his family in Pueblo, and, with his wife Marianne developed a youth drama group that performed dramatizations of the mysteries of the rosary in diocesan and archdiocesan functions. That group eventually received an invitation to perform at World Youth Day in Denver in 1993, and in Rome in 2000. At Nativity Parish, he started a religious art non profit business which employed people with disabilities. They specialized in producing Christmas scene display panels to be placed in yards to promote the true meaning of Christmas. He and his wife Marianne have been secular Franciscans for 20 years. He has been serving as Minister for the oldest fraternity in Denver - St. Elizabeth of Hungary fraternity- the fraternity that Julia Greeley was a member of. His interests outside of ministry included reading, cars, movies, and travel. He had a book collection of 1,000 books. Deacon David had a quiet, caring personality that people loved. He was a wonderful listener. He will be greatly missed by his family and by many parishioners who loved him. Donations can be made to Julia Greeley Home - a shelter for women and children.
