Jon J. Schroeder

1937 - 2017

Laguna Vista- J Jon Schroeder 80, passed away at home on May 15, 2017. Born February 25, 1937 in Fertile, Minnesota, Jon spent his youth on the family farm where he learned the merits of hard work and long hours, a value that served him well the rest of his life.

After leaving Fertile, Jon thumbed his way to California where he worked odd jobs and eventually ended up working cattle in New Mexico. In 1964, he moved to Port Isabel. Over the years he became well known throughout the area, primarily through his ownership of the Port Motel and Shroeder's full-service filling station where he could be found six days a week. Although he usually worked from dawn to dark, there were occasional days Jon had the good sense to duck out and go fishing or hit the golf course. Still, Jon always loved his work and the opportunity it afforded him to know the people of the town he loved, many of whom became dear friends.

Jon served his community as a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, the board of First Bank of Port Isabel and Port Isabel Planning and Zoning Board. He was a past president of the Rotary Club where 20 years of his service was marked by perfect attendance. He was a devout Christian and his faith was a strength and solace to him throughout his life. Any given Friday night he could be found at Tarpon stadium sitting next to Ann and yelling for his team.

Jon is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ann Privett Schroeder, daughter Heather (David) DeAlejandro, grandchildren Roger Schaertl, Sterling Morrison and Saydee Morrison, sisters Gwen Vasenden, Jane Dance, and Diane (Chuck) Dunn, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Nedra Schroeder, sister Sidone Schroeder, and nephews Walter Dance and Mitchell Dunn. He will be missed.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at Cornerstone Church of Bayview, 106 Madelyn Rose, on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Animal Rescue. P.O Box 2126 South Padre Island, TX 78597.
