1934 - 2018

Judith Shields Durham of Shallotte passed away Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018, at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick with her loving family by her side. She was born in Spring Garden, Va., on Aug. 24, 1934. She is preceded in death by her husband, Carson Herman Durham III; her parents, Charles Vester Shields and Myrtle Lester Shields; her sisters, Stanley Presto, Ryland Coggins and Ruby Spencer; and brother, Jack Shields.
Mrs. Durham graduated from Averett University and Longwood University with a degree in elementary education. While in school, she met her future husband and they married on July 13, 1957, and enjoyed more than 60 years together until his passing in December 2016. Mrs. Durham taught school in Blacksburg, Va., and Greensboro before becoming a devoted mother to her three children. After residing in Greensboro for 27 years, the Durham family moved to Shallotte in 1985. Mrs. Durham, along with her husband, established several successful businesses that are still in operation today. Many will remember her from Carson Cards and Gifts, where she was always willing to offer her assistance and share one of her beautiful smiles.
Mrs. Durham loved to play golf and was a member of the Brierwood Ninettes and Eighteen Holers. She taught her children and grandchildren the game and loved spending time with them on the golf course.
Mrs. Durham was a devoted member of Shallotte Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Joyce Skeen Circle. She will always be remembered for her ability to see the positive in any situation and for keeping her family and friends entertained by her unique sense of humor.
Mrs. Durham was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.
She is survived by her three children, Carson Herman Durham IV, Judith Allen Durham Huffman and her husband, Craig, and Charles Holt Durham Sr. and his wife, Sherry. In addition, eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild, who were her pride and joy, Madison Durham Stewart and her husband Jim, Chad Benjamin Huffman, Charles Holt Durham Jr., Connor Holden Durham, Cameron Blake Huffman, Carson Herman Durham V, Kathleen Blake Durham, Christian Barnes Huffman and Charlotte Emilia Stewart. Also surviving are her sisters, Whitney S. Cobbs and husband, William, and Barbara S. Collie; and 18 special nieces and nephews. Mrs. Durham was extremely blessed to have many loyal and faithful friends.
The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at Brunswick Funeral Service, 5229 Ocean Highway W. and at the home of Craig and Judith Allen Huffman.
The funeral service took place at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at Shallotte Presbyterian Church, 5070 Main St., Shallotte, followed by a graveside service at Brunswick Memorial Gardens.
