Richard Davis Obituary

Richard Ravanel Davis, former mayor and life-long resident of Bryan County died peacefully at home with his family Sunday morning, January 29th. He was born on July 1, 1935, to Rad and Madeline Davis. They lived in Clyde, Ga, part of the Fort Stewart reservation for the first few years of his life. He attended school at Richmond Hill, where he graduated. He married Christine Black of Vidalia, Ga. Together they had two children, Dean and Chris Davis. His first job was at National Cash Register (NCR) as a service technician. He was also employed by Interlogic Trace before opening his own computer sales and service business.

His love of politics led him to run for city council and then mayor where he served for a total of thirty-one years. Richard loved Richmond Hill and always strived to do what was best for the city. Under his leadership, JF Gregory Park was developed, the Great Ogeechee Seafood festival was revitalized, and sewage and wastewater facilities were modernized among other accomplishments.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Davis; his son Christopher Davis (Heather); his grandchildren, Mckenzie Davis Raun (Jesse), Richard Davis, Hannah Davis, Hayden Davis; great grandchildren, Caroline Greeson, Jenna Raun; siblings, Boyce Davis, Randy Davis (Phyllis); several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son, Dean Russel Davis; sisters Lillie Sheppard, Violet Davis, Avie Rushing; brothers Toy Davis, Ralph Davis, Lee Davis, and Redge Davis

Funeral service will be held Thursday February 2nd, at 11 o'clock am at Richmond Hill United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Richmond Hill First Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 1st from 6 to 8 pm at the Richmond Hill Funeral Home.

Christine and Family
I was sadden to hear about Richard's passing. It has been a long time since I have been to Richmond Hill but have kept up with the progress of Richmond Hill through the years through Boyce. The progress has been in large part because of Richard. He was a good leader. Just remember, God is Good, and will help you through this time if you will just ask. I will keep the family in my prayers. God's speed to the family.

I knew Richard from attending the annual Davis family reunion. My mother, Dollie Mae, was first cousin, daughter of George and Hattie Davis Gill.

I was blessed to have known Mr. Richard for many years. I knew his precious mother. I have been blessed to know most of his family. He was a little bong, caring man with respect and love for others first. Memories I have to cherish a man that done what he said he was going to do. Prayers for his family and friends for we lost a good man.

You are loved, honored, and cherish by so many friends, family, and the city of Richmond Hill. Richard was a super close friend of whom I always looked up to and for unknown reason took our friendship at heart, he as mayor pro tem he and then Mayor doug Ellis allowed me to design and build the first real City Hall. Many other projects they desired we both shared our love for and of country music, Christine and family I love you guys we all can cherish all he did and the lives he touched

I will miss Richard so much. He was a charter and founding member of the Exchange Club of Richmond Hill in 1984, and could always be counted on whenever the club had a project planned or shrimp jambalaya to be prepared during the Seafood Festival. Richard's leadership is the primary reason that Richmond Hill has progressed to what it is today--one of the best places in America to live and raise a family. The picture attached is of Richard stirring his world famous jambalaya in Oct. 2005, and another of Richard and Christine at the Richard Davis Day event in April, 2010.
