I just came across this sad news. I had Professor Chilungu for a gen ed anthropology class. He was always upbeat. I stayed after class a few times to chat with him. I'm hard pressed to recall any teacher that has been more passionate about their subject matter than he was. Anthropology excited him.
May his soul rest in peace, and relish in conversation with George Murdock and others dear to him. My sincerest condolences to his dear ones.

I would like to share fond memories of Simeon Chilungu beginning when he was a graduate student in Anthropology at the University at Buffalo. I served on his doctoral committee and then kept in touch with him through the 1970s and '80s. His PhD research on the health of Yemeni and African-American communities in Lackawanna, NY, was a ground-breaking study in the early years of medical anthropology. After graduating from UB, Simeon embarked on a long and successful career as an educator and researcher at Buffalo State College, SUNY. It was a great pleasure to see what an excellent professor he was and the enthusiasm and rigor he brought to his classes. I also want to mention the valuable contribution that Simeon continued to make to the Yemeni community and college students. My sincere condolences to Kathleen and to their children and other family members.
