Allan Lipman Obituary

Lipman, Allan Ross

December 13, 1932 - June 12, 2024

Allan R. Lipman's highest priority was his family. Leah, his wife of 66 years, his daughter Joan and son-in-law Mark, his late son Bob and daughter-in-law Allison, and his grandchildren Hallie (Aaron), Micaela (Arthur), Ilana, Elise, Lily, Aaron, and Asher all felt his love, support, affection, and wisdom. Most recently, the addition of great-grandchildren Lilah and Naomi brought him immense joy. There was never any question that, if friends or family needed help, Allan was always happy to be there for them.

Allan most recently lived in Rockville, MD, but was a proud Buffalonian, having lived most of his life in Williamsville, NY.

He graduated from Bennett High School (1950), Syracuse University (1953), and Harvard Law School (1956), where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. Allan understood the importance of supporting his community as well as his family. He served on the board of the Buffalo Children's Hospital Resource Foundation, the Jewish Philanthropy Foundation of Buffalo, and other organizations. He was also past president of the Westwood Country Club and the Erie County Bar Association.

Allan was universally respected as a skillful and committed attorney. After two years on active duty with the US Army, he returned to Buffalo to practice law. After being admitted in 1977 to the Florida bar, he practiced law in both states. In his early career, he was also an adjunct professor at UB Law School and research counsel to the NY Commission on the Revision of the Estate Laws. He was active in private practice until the age of 80 and authored books and articles on various legal subjects.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Buffalo Jewish Federation or a charity of your choice are appreciated.

Warm condolences to your family. Allan and my father, Joe Gastel, were colleagues -- both attorneys, working hard and raising their families in Williamsville. I'm glad Allan lived to lived to pass his love to three generations.

Allan was a brilliant and well respected attorney. He was also a gentleman who was understated and not pretentious. It was always a pleasure to see him at professional events or community events. My condolences.
