Dr. Allen Louis Lesswing, an orthopedic surgeon and former physician for the Buffalo Sabres, died Tuesday in Oxford Village at Canterbury Woods, Amherst, where he was a resident. He was 86.
Born in Buffalo, he was a 1946 graduate of Kensington High School, where he was senior class president, a cheerleader and a member of the swim team. He earned a bachelor's degree from Franklin and Marshall College, where he was a member of the swim team and Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.
He received his medical degree from the University of Buffalo in 1952.
He interned at the former Deaconess Hospital, then served in the Navy aboard the USS Taconic, based in Norfolk, Va.
After completing his service, he did his residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and returned to Buffalo to do a residency at the former E.J. Meyer Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Lesswing, who maintained a practice in Amherst, served as head of the Department of Orthopedics at Deaconess Hospital. He was team physician for the Buffalo Bisons hockey team and later for the Sabres. He retired in 1996.
He was a clinical assistant professor at UB and a former president of the Erie County Medical Society.
He headed the Limb Disability Clinic for the Crippled Children's Guild in the 1970s and 1980s and frequently appeared with his patients on the annual Variety Club Telethon on WKBW-TV, Channel 7. He published several papers that improved the results of limb amputation.
An avid sailor, he was a member of the Buffalo Yacht Club. He also was a member of the Buffalo Club.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Joan Marks; a daughter, Alison J. Dengler; two sons, Mark A. and Grant P.; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday in Perna Dengler Roberts Funeral Home, 1671 Maple Road, Amherst.

Please accept my deepest sympathy. Allen was one of the finest men I ever had the pleasure of knowing. We were fraternity brothers & roommates Phi Kappa Tau at Franklin & Marshall College. I think of him often.
