Carolyn Schnatz Obituary

Schnatz, Carolyn Larter

April 4, 1932 - April 24, 2024

A resident at Seabury in Bloomfield, CT and formerly of West Hartford, passed away peacefully on April 24th. Like her husband Dave whom she adored, Carolyn was born in Buffalo, NY. It was there while attending Buffalo State University that she met Dave, a student at the University of Buffalo (UB) Medical School. Their marriage and partnership of 65 years was filled with extraordinary love and devotion. Carolyn had a twinkle in her eye that she gracefully shared with her family, friends, and people in her daily life. Her smile was unmistakable and widely recognized; people she encountered were moved by her warm and grateful way. Life brought her great joy and she was eager to share that joy with others. She was extremely proud of her family and offered unconditional love to both her children and grandchildren, a cornerstone of Carolyn and Dave's life. Family celebrations, of which there were many, brought both pride and delight to Carolyn and Dave. Each celebration was always followed by a call of thanks and a note of appreciation. She was thankful for her life and family and expressed her gratitude often and eloquently. Carolyn championed women and mothers, girls supporting girls, and boys becoming men. She believed in hard work and the joy and satisfaction it brings. And after the work was completed, she loved to laugh and have fun. She volunteered for the League of Women Voters, marched in protest of war, and offered her time and talent to many local organizations. She cared about the disadvantaged in her community and loved her country. Carolyn supported numerous organizations and was proud that she and Dave could help others. Her circle of concern was expansive, thoughtful and generous. Always gracious, grateful and kind, Carolyn expressed those feelings through the words of a former English teacher. Her penchant for proper grammar and ability to express herself with precision and thoughtful language were appreciated and admired by her many friends and colleagues. A wonderful listener who cared, Carolyn carried herself and spoke in a unique and warm way that was both memorable and comforting. Carolyn waspredeceased by her husband, J. David Schnatz M.D. She leaves her daughter Julie Schnatz Rybeck and her husband, Dean Rybeck as well as her son, Peter F. Schnatz D.O. and his wife, Melanie. She was a loving and proud grandmother of six grandchildren whom she adored and unequivocally supported: Margo and Lincoln Rybeck, Rebekah, Abigail, Sarah and David Schnatz. A celebration of Carolyn's wonderful life will be held at the church she and Dave loved and supported, Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Hartford, Connecticut, on May 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.

I am not surprised by all the love and joy expressed in the words about Carolyn. My husband Bob and I knew both Carolyn and Dave in Buffalo where they made their first home. David was in our weeding and they both made the trip to Maine to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.
Carolyn was always so kind and hospitable and understanding. So many friends I know will be so sad to receive Julie's kind note notifying us of Carolyn's passing.. I aways thought of Carolyn as a kind and caring and above all a family person. I am grateful that she was in my life
With so much love, Alice Dillon

Carolyn was such an important person in our lives. Almost 20 years ago, she helped us find our home and she quickly became a dear friend. Over time, she and Dave felt like our East Coast surrogate parents.
She enriched the lives of those around her. And ahe always carried herself with tremendous grace and dignity.
She will always be our daughter’s birthday buddy.❤ And we will miss her immensely.

I would like to send my Deepest Condolences to Carolyns family and friends. Carolyn was and always will be so very special to me. We formed a bond that was unbreakable. We shared joy, tears, unconditional love and laughter. She was such an incredible woman with an amazing light and compassion. Her love for her husband and family went to the ends of the earth. I will always hold a special place in my heart just for her. I pray for her family and friends to find comfort during this difficult time.

I got to know Dave and Carolyn when they became residents of Seabury and grew to love and admire both of them. It was so difficult for Carolyn when Dave died but she grieved privately and stood tall when in the presence of others. I have often wished that I had known Carolyn through the years. Such great presence and a loving spirit. Carolyn you will be missed by many. Ann Winship

My decades growing up with the Schnatz-Rybeck family, confirmed that Carolyn was adored by all. She had this youthful glow of a considerate and kind soul. I am so happy that she graced all of us with 92 years!! I hope the Schnatz-Rybeck families find strength, during this difficult time, in the many positive memories they have with Carolyn.
