Ernest Oberholzer Obituary
June 27, 1919 – Dec. 26, 2013
Ernest R. Oberholzer, a Navy veteran and a retired chief metallurgist for Bethlehem Steel, died Thursday in Autumn View Health Care Facility, Hamburg. He was 94.
He was born in Weehawken, N.J., and was raised in Allentown, Pa., where he was a 1937 graduate of South Whitehall High School.
He was a 1941 graduate of Lehigh University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering with a major in metallurgy.
Mr. Oberholzer, of Hamburg, entered Bethlehem Steel's management training course in 1941, shortly before he was assigned to the corporation's Lackawanna plant.
He worked his way up from metallurgist to plant chief metallurgist before retiring in February 1982.
Mr. Oberholzer left Bethlehem Steel during a stint in the Navy during World War II. While in the Navy, he served in the Philippines for about a year.
He married Lorraine Smith in 1945 and rejoined Bethlehem Steel in 1946.
During his years at the Lackawanna plant, Mr. Oberholzer moved up through several posts, including metallurgist, strip mill chief metallurgical service engineer, strip mill metallurgist, assistant chief metallurgist and plant chief metallurgist.
He was a member of the American Society for Metals and the American Iron and Steel Institutes.
He was a longtime member of St. James United Church of Christ in Hamburg and a member of the Bethlehem Management Club.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda Mosley and Bonnie Fabin; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Loomis, Offers & Loomis Inc., 207 Main St., Hamburg.
