Just found this obit for my friend Ernie. We were in the astronomy club at the Mof Sc in Buffalo in the fifties, I think. It was long ago & I can't think of any thing to say, except that we had great conversations together & I'm sorry he's gone. I'll soon be following. I just remembered, I think he followed George Davis.

I was supposed to be where Ernst was a couple of times, sadly his and his wife's health prevented that. I talked with him on the phone a time or two back in the aughts. He was very helpful and kind then. He is still very much missed in the mycology community. Much love to his family for sharing this wonderful man with us.

I am sad that I cannot say I know Mr. Both, or any of his family, well, but my 10 year old son and I had a wonderful encounter with Mr. Both this past March in Eden,NY. Mr. Both noticed my son studying a book about tanks that my son almost always has with him. Mr. Both and my son Louie talked for a while about tanks and a little of Mr. Both's life as a young man. I had the privilege to speak with Mr. Both a few moments myself. He didn't brag on anything or tell us any of the wonderful things he's accomplished in his lifetime. When I read his obituary I was amazed I had the blessing to speak with such a man. My son wouldn't stop talking about his conversation with this man who had like interests as he did and who had such an interesting past. In fact, Mr. Both wrote our address down and sent Louie two tank books, written in German, with a thoughtful note enclosed. What a treasure they have become! Louie was in tears when I told him of Mr. Both's passing, as was I. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family- may God send you the comfort you need.
With Deepest Sympathy,

My favorite professor in college. Mr. Both taught me Astronomy at D'Youville College many years ago. I always felt so fortunate to have him as my teacher. He made the subject come alive every single class. I will never forget him.

Please accept my sincere condolences.

Ernst was the BEST Director the Museum ever had. There was an honest mutual repect that he had for everyone that worked for him. When I think of the Buffalo Museum of Science, I think of Ernst. Words don't serve me well here, God Bless Ernst and God Bless you in your loss.

My wife Jeannie and I extend our deepest condolences to the family of Ernie Both on his passing. We grieve for them knowing that Ernie's passing is harder for them than for anyone else. Being in the midst of a lengthy hospitalization myself, I had not spoken to him since April and hoped his health problems were improving. I met Ernie when we were students at UB when his family and he arrived here after their escape from Europe. Our shared love of the music of Anton Bruecker, nature and learning made us dear friends and comrades. His selfless dedication to Truth, freedom and nature was Ernie's hallmark. "Gladly would he learn and gladly teach". The record of his accomplishments in Astronomy and international discoveries in boletes attest to that. Proud to be Best Man at his wedding to Billie, the love of his life, my Jeannie and I became close friends with them in the following years. Not even the tragic death of their heroic son,Erik, kept Ernie and Billie from the service they continued to give to all. Mourning the shock of Ernie's passing, I know he is again with his parents, his brother and his beloved Billie and Erik. In the "Alte Deutsche Weise" (Old German Ways) Ernie and I shared, we would say "Auf Wiedersehn" (Until we see each other again). Hoping to do so, "In der Fride vom Uncer Herr Jesu" (in the Peace of our Lord,Jesus): "Schlaf wohl, Ernie, meine lieber Freund." (sleep well, Ernie, my dear Friend).

It was my great honor and privilege to have known Ernst. In my years at the Museum, Ernst and I became close friends and I treasure the many hours we spent together at our weekly lunches. He was a towering intellect and a gentle man. His stories of his families escape in WWII always enthralled me. My condolences to his family. He now belongs to the ages.

Dr. Both was a wonderful mentor to people of all ages here in Western New York. I remember being a member of the Buffalo Astronomical Association as a kid. Ernst was able to communicate his interest in science to me, a pre-teen, as well as to the older members, in a way that was both engaging and all inclusive. He was a true community educator and a local treasure. Very sad to have lost him.
