Gary Warner Obituary

Warner, Gary L.

Apr 3, 1938 - Mar 12, 2025

Age 86, of the Town of Tonawanda, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, just shy of his 87th birthday. Son of the late Russell and Marjorie Warner; brother of the late Robert (late Ann) Warner. Former husband of Judith (O'Brien) Warner and the late Virginia Spencer. Loving father of Kathleen (Michael) Yacos, Michael (Lisa) Warner, Gregory (Andrea) Warner, Jay Warner, Erin (Daniel) Finn, Sean Murphy, and Shane Murphy. Cherished grandfather of Michael (Heather), Lauren (James), Andrew (Brianna), Michael, Matthew (Samantha), William, Shawn (Alex), Hunter, Preston, Luca, Lincoln, Locke, Aidan, Tierney, Morgan, Madison, McKenzie, Sheamus, and Shealon, and great-grandfather of Madison, Jacob, Pierce, Hudson, Stella, and Jameson. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, and lifelong friend Michael "Woons" Woods. Gary's basketball legacy began at Kenmore West (Class of 1956), where he was a standout scorer, earning First Team All-League and All-NFL honors. He was inducted into the Kenmore West Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. A multi-time National AAU MVP, he competed at a high level until age 70, earning MVP honors at the Eastern Regional AAU Tournament in 1981. A member of the Eldredge Bicycle Club since 1959, Gary played alongside and against legends like Bob Lanier, Hubie Brown, Calvin Murphy, and Randy Smith. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army (1956-1958) as a Specialist 4th Class, continuing in the Reserves until 1962. He was later offered a full scholarship to play for Niagara University under Taps Gallagher, but family obligations took precedence. Gary pursued his education at Medaille College, earning honor roll distinctions, and had a 36-year career in sales management at Buffalo Hotel Supply, where he was named Sales/Marketing Person of the Year (1983) before retiring in 2009. In retirement, Gary cherished time with family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, wisdom, and excellence that will be remembered for generations. Calling hours: Sunday, March 16, from 4-8 PM at John O. Roth Funeral Home, Inc., 25 William St., City of Tonawanda. Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, March 17, at 9:30 AM at St. John the Baptist RC Church, 1085 Englewood Ave., Town of Tonawanda. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery. We will miss Gary and Woons bantering back and forth with each other. Always left us in stitches laughing.

A great friend and teammate. I never heard a negative word about Gary Warner unless you count "don't let him shoot" as a negative.

He was a great man. Loved Family. Kind and considerate. He will be missed, but he is no longer in pain and discomfort. He will be watching over all of us.

To the entire family, please accept my deepest condolences on Gary's passing. We became friends while working together at Buffalo Hotel Supply from 1985 until 1996. Even though we didn't keep in close contact after the BHS years, I always considered Gary a good friend. Because I am out of town, I will not be able to attend the celebration of his great life but you are all in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Jeff
