Dear Mrs. Shirley Coulter, and the entire Coulter Family:
On behalf of the New York Farm Bureau Board, our NYFB staff, and myself, I would like to extend Farm Bureau’s sincere and heartfelt condolences in regard to the passing of our good friend, Jim Coulter.
Jim was a very honorable and giving man, with a special passion for agriculture. Farm Bureau is very honored, and very thankful, that Jim saw fit to become so involved in the Farm Bureau organization, where he devoted a great deal of his time and his leadership. We are also very pleased and proud that New York Farm Bureau was able to honor Jim with NYFB’s highest form of recognition, the NYFB Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award, in 2005.
Jim will be missed, but his friendship, and his contributions to agriculture, will not be forgotten.
Sincerely,
Jeff Kirby, Executive Director
New York Farm Bureau

Shirley, I just found the obit on Jim this morning, not one to get the papers that often. I was so saddened to hear of Jim's passing, he was such a joy to visit with on the many times I visited your office over the past several years, he will be truly missed by all who knew him. There aren't many left in our community who made such a great contribution to the farming and fruit growing business, such as the strawberry patch of the 'Coulter farms'. May the love you both shared, carry you through these enduring times. Your friend, Grace Austin

Dear Mrs. Coulter
Although I never had the honor of meeting your husband, I have had the great fortune to be a friend of your son Jim. If my friend - and his special family - are a testament to who your husband was, you were very blessed to have him. For all the praises of the Jim's husbandry of the land, I think he would be the most proud of what he raised in his home. I hope that all of the love and kindnesses coming back to you are some comfort in this time of grief. Please know that my wife and children are sending our thoughts your way, as well as our thanks for giving us such a fine man for a friend.

Brian and I fondly remember living on the Coulter Farm for a short time and enjoying the "fruits" of a well-run business. Shirley, we are sorry to hear of your loss, but know that Jim will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

My first strawberry picking was at the Farm. I then went on to work my way through high school and college working for Jim. He was one of best bosses I have ever had. He could always make you smile and treated everyone with kindness! We need more people like him! My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family Shirley!

A country gentleman, remembered in many ways- for his expertise in the chemicals we needed in the vineyards, for the u-pick strawberries, we really didn't eat too many, for his support of the local wine trail. Most of all for his ready smile and genuine concern for others. I will miss him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I first met Jim and Shirley in 1983 picking strawberries in their fields. Our friendship grew when my sister Ellen and her husband Brian moved next door to them. Then I worked with Jim for many years in Farm Bureau. You were always a great example and a wise man. Thank you for a legacy to look up to-

I will remember Jim with his smile always taking the time to inquire about myself and my family. He will be missed as a friend and an Alpha Gamma Rho Brother. I still remember as a young farm kid with Jim showing up at our farm stand with 12 Jumbo strawberries in an egg carton. He sure knew how to grow'em!

I got to know Jim when I came to Cornell as a vegetable specialist in 1994. Jim was an innovative farmer and one who often let us use his farm for field trials that would benefit the entire industry. He was always willing to share his knowledge with all growers. He was a true gentleman and a kind man with a wonderful sense of humor. On behalf of Cornell and Cooperative Extension, our condolences go out to his friends and family.

Jim was the first cherry grower I ever met after taking a job with Farm Bureau. He taught me a lot in that first afternoon I spent with him - and not just about cherries! He had such a warm way of connecting with people and made me feel so welcome in western New York. I will miss him.

There are only a few people in this world who you are drawn to when they enter a room. Jim was one of them. A gentleman; he was friendly, knowledgeable, a great listener, someone you could relax around. We need more Jim Coulters and I will miss him.

Shirley, I remember fondly Jim's and your hospitality many years ago when Jim invited me to a Niagara Farm Bureau meeting. Although I have not seen either of you often since then, each time had brought me a special pleasure.
