James KAVANAGH Obituary

KAVANAGH - James J.
Of Lancaster, NY, June 26th, 2021. Beloved husband of 53 years to Mary Young Kavanagh, deceased; dear father of James (Mary), Suzanne (Loïc) Kavanagh, Cindy (Ronald) Barnhardt, Karen (John) Roberts and Kathleen Kavanagh, deceased; loving grandfather of Colin, John, Lauren, Megan, Joseph, Tara, Austin, Sarah, Daniel and Sean; great-grandfather of Joshua, Andrew, Owen, Addelyn, Elijah, Melody and Grace; he is survived by his close friend Shirley Zurbrick. Jim was born on May 17, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois, was an only child just nine years old when he lost his father, John. His mother returned with Jim to Lancaster in 1938 where he would later marry and have five children with his wife, Mary Young. He was an important part of the lives of his children, grandkids, great-grandkids and the local community. He was the son of John Francis and Genevieve Dempsey Kavanagh; grandson of John Kavanagh and Mary Connoly, who emigrated from Ireland in 1890 and settled in Chicago. Jim graduated from Lancaster High School in 1948 and enrolled at Buffalo State Teachers College where he earned a Master's degree in Education. He went on to teach mathematics and coach high school football, taking West Seneca to win ECIC Division 1 championship in 1965 and co-championship in 1966. He was later Principal of West Seneca West High School. He served as a Lieutenant in the New York Army National Guard 152nd Engineer Battalion and was elected a Trustee of the Village of Lancaster. He was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football, and enjoyed his time participating in the Lancaster Historical Society and Buffalo Civil War Roundtable. For over 20 years, Jim delivered Meals on Wheels, annually organized individuals to fund raise for Children's Hospital on Buffalo News Kids Day and was chairperson of the Lancaster Reunion for high school classes that graduated over 50 years ago. Jim was well-read and traveled widely. From chilly Arctic waters, to majestic U.S. National Parks, through Europe and Africa, he could explain the history of any place when he explored with his family. Just two weeks before he passed, Jim dined out at his favorite restaurant, Frank's on Broadway, in Lancaster, still driving his friend Shirley on dates together. With his kids and great-grandkids, he had one last backyard party earlier in June, full of life. He passed away in his sleep the evening of Saturday, June 26, 2021 at the age of 92, in his own Lancaster home that had been in his mother's family since the 1890's. He was under the attention of his children, extended family and compassionate Hospice workers. He can now enjoy a well-earned rest, joining his wife Mary and his daughter Kathleen. A Celebration of Life will be organized by his family at a later date. Please share condolences at www.wendelandloecherinc.com

I remember Mr. Kavanaugh first as my Math teacher in Junior High at West Seneca. He was strict, but he made you want to learn. I was then reacquainted with him as a patient at the doctor's office where I worked. I was fortunate to get to know him as an adult and realized what a kind and gentle man he was. I addressed him as "Mr. Kavanaugh and he said, " You can call me Jim now." I will always remember that. I know that he will be missed by everyone who knew him, and my heart goes out to his family for your loss. How blessed you are to have him in your life.

Deepest condolences on the loss of a caring, loving, generous individual! Mr. Kavanagh has contributed to this world in many beautiful ways! He had a long, rich life. Wonderful to learn that his passing was peaceful and occurred while in slumber in his family's historic Lancaster home.

Karen & Kathleen were my classmates at Lancaster High School, we graduated from the class of 1979. Karen & Kathy were both so much fun to have as friends, twins, yet each with their own special attributes & unique character. My heart goes out to you Karen, to your family & loved ones, for the loss of Kathleen and now most recently, you Dad. It is never time to say goodbye to loved ones. Hang in there. May your sister & father rest in peace. My you Karen and all, find peace through shared moments & treasured memories.

To the family of my dear High School Coach, I extend my sincere condolences. Like many others, I am deeply saddened by Coach’s passing. I will always remember what an extraordinary man he was and what an extraordinary life he lived.
In my eyes, Coach Kavanagh is the perfect role model as evidenced by his dedication to family, community and service to country. I see him as a true leader in all circumstances of life. The qualities he displayed as a Coach captured my admiration and respect. I will always remember him and the memories made especially on the football field. These memories are precious and will stay with me for a lifetime. And, I know many of his players feel the same way.
I consider it a great honor and privilege to call him Coach. As Head Coach he led our ’67 class to an overall record of 28-1 during our 4 year High School football career. During this time he impressed me with his love for the game and his players.
Personally speaking, at 2 critical points in my life when I was utterly lost and searching for direction, God sent Coach K to find me and give my life direction. In August 1967, Coach K found me and found a football opportunity in the state of Virginia that resulted in a free college education. And in June 1972, he gave me an opportunity to substitute teach which inspired me to enter the teaching profession. These two opportunities had a profound impact on my life; more than words can describe. And each day I give thanks to God for putting Coach K in my life.
So today and each day of my life, I shall salute him and all the great things he has done for family, community and service to country. We (family, friends, players, students, etc.) are the benefactors of his great accomplishments, hard work and dedication to others.
I hope these few words bring comfort to those saddened by his passing in the days ahead.

With kindest regards,
Russ Bauda, Co-Captain of the 66 Team

Jim Kavanagh was a postive influence on so many lives as a teacher, coach, and principal. He encouraged me in the first years of my tenure at West Senior. He called me into his office one day and said we needed a student news paper and wanted to know if I would be the adviser -- and so started years of literacy and leadership education for our students. He was an inspirational leader who was a model leader for setting realistic goals and handling controversy. My wife and I extend our sympathy to his family and loved ones.

Jim was the best cousin and friend we could have. His exemplary life was full of love, friendliness, caring, and concern. What a role model he was for our family. We would visit him anywhere when he went on another adventure whether it was in Vero Beach, Daytona Beach, Key West, Orlando, or back at his home in Lancaster. He was loved by everyone. His greatest legacy is his wonderful family, and our hearts go out to all of them, and we're keeping them all in our prayers. We love and miss you, Jim.

To the bestest father anyone could have: Where do I begin? So many memories. We started having breakfast together every Saturday at Memories (with your favorite waitress Andrea) after you retired and I was newly married living in an apartment around the corner. After having children, bringing them to stay with you and Mom in Vero Beach.
Not only were you the best father any daughter could have asked for but you were truly one of my closest friends as I got older. I was lucky to have shared so much time with you. Going to lunch, dinner, playing Euchre, renting trailers at Sherkston (sitting in the surf having a beer was one of your favorites), having season tickets to the Buffalo Bills together for 25 years, celebrating all the holidays (especially our favorite St. Patrick’s Day in South Buffalo), traveling, just talking.
I don’t think too many daughters have a father that was so close to so many of their friends. Such a tribute to one of the kindest, gentlest, positive persons anyone has ever met.
I know you are up there dancing with Mom and Kathleen (probably drinking a black Russian If Kathleen has her way)! Miss you to the stars and back!
Love,
Cindy

What a great teacher he was. He was my math teacher in Jr High at West Seneca. I got to see "Jim" as he told me to call him many years later at the Dr's office where I worked. He said "no formalities just call me Jim" We had a good laugh. I never saw him again but will always have good memories of a tough but great teacher. Rest in peace "Jim"

My sincere condolences to all the friends and members of the Kavanagh family. The question, whenever asked, 'Where were you when President John F Kenedy was shot?' always brings up my memories of having Mr. Kavanagh as my math teacher. I was sitting in his class when the announcement came over the intercom that President Kennedy was shot and had died. Mr Kavanagh became very somber and tried to console all of us. No easy task. I will never forget his sincerity and humanity that day and always afterwards. He was my favorite math teacher in West Seneca Junior High. He will always be one of my all-time heroes.
Thank you Mr. Kavanagh for caring.

Over the last 8 years or so, I always sat next to Jim at Tim Horton's so I could hear and share his views on everything from politics to world views to the Civil War and everything in between. His knowledge on Notre Dame football was second to none and I always reminded him the Alabama had 16 championships to the one that Notre Dame had! He was a true spokesman on many subjects and I will miss him for the knowledge that he gave me. His family is second to none. Rest well my friend.

Every encounter, whether work or pleasure, I came away a better person interacting with Jim. His assignment complete, Jim now returns to the joyful embrace of his Mary and the Lord...Shalom
