Joan Schrauth Obituary

Passed away on October 6, 2025 after 99 years of a persevering life of love and duty. She is reunited with her soulmate, husband Joe, and devoted son, Paul. Born on August 12, 1926, in Batavia, NY, she was one of eight children raised during the Great Depression. Known to her family as Joanne Yunker, she distinguished herself early as valedictorian of her high school in Oakfield, NY at just sixteen. Joan went on to attend Cornell University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Organic Chemistry in 1947. During her time there, she served as president of the Chi Omega sorority and met Amandus Joseph Schrauth, president of his fraternity and the love of her life. Growing deep roots in Hamburg, NY, Joan indefatigably raised eight children with unwavering energy and care. She also found joy in tennis, golf, softball, cards, and traveling. Her warmth and wit enriched the lives of many during her fifty-five flourishing years in Hamburg. Joan is remembered with love by her children: Peter (Christine), Matt (Teri), Tom (Pam), Joan, Rosemary (Alan), Andrew, Catherine (Alan), and daughter-in-law Sandy. Sixteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren will forever cherish memories of their beloved "GJ." Her brothers Richard and Beanie and sisters-in-law Irene and Bonnie also mourn her passing while celebrating her enduring spirit. In honor of Joan's lifelong dedication to nourishing those around her-through homemade bread, cookies always waiting in the freezer, and bountiful meals for every occasion-donations may be made to FeedMore WNY. May Joan's memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.

Earlier today

I called her Grandma Joan - though she wasn´t my grandmother, that´s how I always thought of her. I was fortunate to grow up close to my cousins, who felt more like brothers and sisters, and "GJ" was a constant, loving presence in all our lives.

Some of my fondest childhood memories were spent in her backyard swimming pool, surrounded by laughter and the warmth she so naturally brought to everyone around her. She made these sour cream cookies that, at first, sounded weird but were amazing - something I´ve never come across since. The house in Hamburg will always hold a special place in my heart - a place filled with love, smiles, and the occasional look from GJ that reminded me to be on my best behavior.

She had a gentle spirit and a rare gift for making people feel welcome. GJ will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. May she rest peacefully, reunited with her loved ones.
