John Cangelosi Obituary

CANGELOSI-John T. M.D. Born October 10, 1913 died Saturday July 14, 2007 morning at the age of 93. He was the beloved uncle of John Petrie of New Market, Maryland, Louis Ciola, Ann Ciola and Mary Ciola of Snyder, New York, great uncle to Tim Petrie, cousin to Dominic Cangelosi of California, Frances Corridon of Nevada, and John Comella of Maryland. Born in Dunkirk, New York, he graduated from St. Mary Academy and Dunkirk High School. He was a graduate of U.B. Medical School Class of 1936 and was Board Certified in Urology. From 1939 to 1953 Dr. Cangelosi served in the U.S. Navy, where he attained the rank of Full Commander and was also attached to the U.S. Marine Corp Regular. During World War II he served on land and aboard ship in many military theaters throughout the world, including Guam, Guadalcanal, China as well as state side assignments in Philadelphia, New York Hospital and Charleston, South Carolina. After World War II he was up for assignment as the personal Physician to Harry S. Truman aboard the presidential yacht. The assignment fell through only because the boat was decommissioned. After leaving the military, Dr. Cangelosi practiced in many area hospitals, including Buffalo General, Children's Hospital and Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, New York. Dr. Cangelosi was a member of the Erie County Medical Society, The Bacelli Club, the Dante Alighieri, Sienna Club, IPRO, SPR, Medgigori, and many other local organizations. He was also a member of the New York Athletic Club since 1947. During his retirement years it became his custom to winter in Palm Dessert where he stayed with his friends Dr. Robert and Dorothy Foote. Dorothy Foote was a longtime writer for the hit series My Three Sons and Dr. Robert was a retired general surgeon that he had met in the Navy aboard ship and had known him for over fifty years. A man of many interests, he made friends easily and will be sorely missed. He leaves behind many friends throughout the United States, including his special lifelong friend Rosella Giancola of Buffalo. Other lifelong friends include Clara Radoani of Buffalo, Enid Bates of Beaufort, South Carolina, Ellen Coats and her sons Craig and Jeffrey Coats of Rye, New York, Barbara Hogan of Connecticut, Dr. William Frane, M.D., Madge Hedlund, her daughter Carolyn McMullen, and her son, John McKay, and Jewel Carrel, and Letitia Wooten all of Palm Dessert, California and Sophie Biernat of Depew, New York. Cousin John and I lost touch for almost 20 years. I found him again in early 2006. I will cherish the time, though short, that I spent with him. He was the last of his generation in our family. John, you'll be missed. Rest in peace.

In 1951,my son, Keith Evan Bates, was a patient of Dr. John Cangelosi at the Naval Hospital in Charleston, SC. Dr. Cangelosi performed surgery on my son which prolonged his life another six years. After Dr. Cangelosi left the Navy we lost track of him until 1957 when Keith was in failing health at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD. He asked for his favorite doctor, Dr. Cangelosi.I was able to locate him through a physicians directory. This kind and caring man came to see my son in Bethesda. After his visit, the care by the hospital staff improved, which I attribute to Dr. Cangelosi's instructions. My son died there at 19 years of age. All these years since, Dr. Cangelosi has had masses for Keith and made donations in his memory. He has kept in touch with me with many, many phone calls and several visits. He is one of my fondest and most impressive memories. I will miss him. My heartfelt sympathy to his family and other friends. Love and Prayers, Enid S. Bates

It was an honor and blessing to know Dr. John Cangelosi. He was a devout Catholic, a humble man. He made you feel happy with his upbeat disposition and warm smile. To you, his family, and Rosella, thank you for being so gracious. I know Our Lord greeted John on July 14 and said "Well done, good and faithful servant..." God bless you.

Hello,
I wish Dr. Jack did not leave us so soon. I know he was old in his body but his thoughts were always current and enlightening. I truly will miss Jack as he was my dear friend and confidant. Dr. Jack truly was inspirational in getting me back on track with my catholic roots, what a gift he gave to me. I will miss our church outings in the Desert and the spaghetti and meatballs. Thank you Jack for loving me (Barb), John, Patrick and Spencer McKay unconditionally. I miss Jack so very much, he was a true blessing. Jack, I will think of you always, and I will know that the Lord is with you and you with your Lord. I will see you in another time and place.

Jack became a great friend during his visits to Palm Desert and Calgary over the past years. My wife Barbara and I along with our sons Patrick and Spencer (the 2 men from Verona) as Jack called them took great joy in our warm relationship with Jack. A true character who we grew to love and care for!
We will miss him greatly but know in our hearts he is with God. Ciao Jack.
