DOWNING - John F. Jr., MD Age 53, of New Canaan, CT, died Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Stamford Hospital, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 28, 1958, in Buffalo, NY. John is survived by his wife Karen Kent Downing of New Canaan, his three sons, Jack, William and Nicholas, all of New Canaan, his sister, Connie (Brian) Millard of Ipswich, MA and his two brothers, Daniel (Laura) Downing of Orchard Park and Michael (Michelle) Downing of Fultonville, NY. He is the son of John F. and Sarah Doran Downing, Sr. of Buffalo. He graduated from St. Joseph Collegiate Institute in Buffalo. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from NYU, he completed his residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York and his sports fellowship at Lenox Hill as a team doctor for the New York Jets. He was a board certified orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Associates of Stamford, CT. He was recently appointed to the Connecticut State Sports Medicine Council. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 10:00 AM at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan on Friday, September 30, 2011, from 4-8 PM. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Carl and Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center at Stamford Hospital, 30 Shelburne Road, Stamford, CT, 06904.
