John Washington Obituary

Washington, John M.

Sep 4, 2024

Of N. Tonawanda, NY. Beloved husband of Germaine (Clark) Washington (Ken-Ton teacher); Dear father of Kathryn and Michael (Michelle) Washington; Loving Poppa of Samatha and Parker. Friends may call Monday, September 9th 5-8 pm at the Lester H. Wedekindt, Inc. Funeral Home, 3290 Delaware Ave. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at 9:30 am at St. John the Baptist Church, 1085 Englewood Ave. Where Military Honors will follow the Mass. Interment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery. John was a US Army Veteran serving in Vietnam "The Big Red One" from 1967-1968 and a recipient of The Silver and Bronze Star and The Purple Heart. John dedicated 20 years of his life as a skilled mechanic at Goodyear, where he was known for his expertise and commitment to quality work. In 1987, he pursued his dream of entrepreneurship and founded Ivy Lea Construction, a company that grew under his leadership into a thriving business. John was incredibly proud that his son, Michael, now carries on his legacy, running the family business with the same dedication and integrity that John instilled in him. John was a man who believed in hard work, honesty, and the importance of family-values that he lived by every day and passed on to his children and grandchildren. He was a dedicated "Poppa" to his two grandchildren, who were the light of his life. John was known for his tireless work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, generosity and deep love for his family, community and country. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Willow Lodge at the Buffalo Veterans Hospital.

Grew up down the street on Ivy Lea. Always looked up to John. Kind of a local hero. Rip

John was my grammar school friend at St Andrew’s. We were in Vietnam at the same time. My mother saw an article in the paper about his father crossing the Delaware (road). My mother got John’s address from George and we wrote each other once. Only ran into him once after that at lunch. My favorite memories are playing softball in a vacant lot between the McCormacks on Traverse with his neighbors and his sister, Barbara. John was a lot of fun back then and I know very successful later. My condolences to his family.

My condolences to the Washington family. It's been a while since I have seen John, but he left me with many fond memories. Memories I will always cherish, and I used to share with Mike. John was always kind and one of the most upbeat people you could ever meet. He always managed to see the silver lining in the darkest of clouds. He had a way about him that after you met him, you couldn't help but like the man. I'm sorry to say that I will be away and unable to attend the services, but I will remember the Washington family in my prayers.
