Aug. 30, 1931 - Dec. 22, 2019

Dr. Joseph A. LaNasa, a dentist in Amherst for more than four decades, died Sunday at the Rosa Coplon Living Center skilled nursing home on the Weinberg Campus in Getzville after a short illness. He was 88.

Born in Buffalo, Dr. LaNasa graduated from Canisius College in 1953 and from University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in 1957. He served in U.S. Public Health Service for two years near Albuquerque, N.M., where he provided dental treatment to students at the Albuquerque Indian School and to communities in a 500-square-mile area via a mobile dental trailer. He achieved the rank of first lieutenant.

He started his career practicing general dentistry in 1959 and retired at the end of February 2001.

He was a member of a number of professional organizations, including the Erie County Dental Society and the American Dental Association, and served in a number of community organizations. He served on the president's council at Canisius College from 1981 to 1983. In 1993, he was presented the Edward J. Doran Award by Catholic Charities of Buffalo. He also was a past vice president and board member at Brookfield Country Club.

He served as a Eucharistic minister at St. Leo the Great Church in Amherst for 23 years. He was installed into the Holy Angels Collegiate Institute Hall of Fame in 2007.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, the former Geraldine Collins, survivors also include daughters, Mary Finucane, Geraldine Anderson, Paula Monaco and Pia O'Connor; a sister, Maria Graziano; and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Leo the Great Church, 885 Sweet Home Road, Amherst.

Joe was a special friend. We enjoyed many rounds of golf with he and Deena over the years at Brookfield and competing for our coveted Burlington trophy. We will miss him with love.
