Lowell Shaw Obituary
July 7, 1930 - December 9, 2025
Lowell "Spike" Shaw of Williamsville, passed away on December 9, 2025. Spike was born July 7, 1930 in Joliet, Illinois. By the age of 10, he had decided to be a French hornist, and received his bachelor's and master's degrees in music performance from Northwestern University. He was a member of the Band at Sampson Air Force Base in Geneva NY before he joined the Buffalo Philharmonic in 1958, playing second horn for 38 years. Spike is known to horn players around the world as the composer of the Fripperies, jazz pieces for four horns, and enjoyed gathering groups to play nearly every week, a tradition he maintained even at age 95. Accompanied by his wife of 72 years, Ellen (née Kulp), he enjoyed attending musical events, traveling, and spending summers in northern Michigan. In addition to his wife, Spike is survived by daughter Gayle Hutton (Ed), son Douglas (Patricia), grandchildren Ian and Alison Shaw, Brooke Hutton, step-grandchildren Matthew and Thomas (Rona) Hutton and their children Olivia, Daniel and Hunter. A celebration of life will take place in the spring.
