Memories
Aunt Willy and my mother were
The closest of friends, often talking and laughing while their daughters (that would be Carrie and me) played happiy. Their laughter is truly one of my fondest memories. They were like two peas in a pod and I'm comforted believing they are again together, laughing.
I have So many treasured memories of sleepovers in the Kunzes house, a home with very different rules:
White bread instead of whole wheat,
Captain crunch instead of special K with honey and wheat germ (what is that anyway!),
Hot dogs and chips instead of hot dogs and sauerkraut,
Vanilla or chocolate ice cream instead of Spumoni (really? Anyone ever heard of Spumoni ice cream?)
But then there were the times when going outdoors was an ordeal, especially if the temperature was below 70° or there was any sort of a breeze. A scarf tied securely under the chin was a must before opening the door. Tied and double checked dutifully by aunt Willy. I remember very distinctly Carrie preparing me for this ritual, saying "my mother is going to want to tie on scarves under our chins, just go along with it and as soon as we're around the block we can just take them off, then before we get back to the house we just put them back on. It's no big deal." Years later we fessed up and of course she laughed, mostly at herself, and I think knowing what we did conjured a certain level of respect for our independence and how we managed to keep our scarf removal on the down low.
She was an independent woman and was, in many ways, ahead of her time. Her love of the Roling Stones, her entrepreneurial spirit, her outlook on marriage, which she pondered with me just last fall, saying she didn't know why anyone would bother with it these days.
A couple of years after Mom died, Dad decided to get remarried and I remember talking to her about it and she very clearly stated, "well Mary Susan, life is for the living!" So as we celebrate Eleanor's amazing life, let's keep her words and her spirit of independence in our hearts and live our lives to the fullest, with respect for others and dignity for ourselves, that's what she did and what she would tell us to do.
I would like to add how much admiration I have for Carrie. Her commitment to take care of her mother under such demanding circumstances is my gold standard for loving another human being
