Richard Price Obituary

Price, Richard William

Mar 14, 2025

Richard Price died unexpectedly at his residence in the Allentown District of Buffalo New York at the age of 85. Richard is survived by two brothers and three sisters. He had a large extended family and will be remembered fondly by his cousins, nieces and nephews as a loving man who was always there to listen, or help with organizing family events. The medical community is where Richard was employed most of his working years in Buffalo. He worked in hematology and genetics at Children's Hospital, and later in genetics at Roswell. Richard was a long-time resident of the Allentown community where he will be missed immensely. He was a man of many talents and interests which he shared with his neighbors. As a photographer he took part in the Allentown Art festival, and served as photographer at community events. He was an avid gardener and looked forward to and eagerly participated in the yearly garden walk. Many will remember him as "The Tomato Man" - giving free seedlings to anyone that wanted them. A concerned naturalist, Richard was involved in Seed Savers, a group dedicated to saving and storing seeds that were not genetically modified. Richard was also a member of the Lexington Co-op for decades. If photography and gardening were his interests, then music was his passion. Early in his life he was a member of his church's choir. From that point on, music was ever present in Richard's life. His most recent undertakings were The Hutchinson's singing group, Buffalo Gay Men's Choir and Friends of Harmony barbershop quartet. Richard devoted a lot of his time supporting the gay community. He authored and published a book depicting gay culture and would attend an annual gay gathering in the Adirondacks. Proud of his ideas and ideals, he was never afraid to offer a well thought out opinion on subjects dear to his heart nor was he afraid to live his life as he wanted. Prior to living in Allentown, Richard lived in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco in the late 1960's, followed by a period in the French Quarter in New Orleans and one in Santa Fe New Mexico. Richard was an adventurer in his own right and didn't mind taking on daunting journeys. He obtained permission to enter and photograph the Anasazi ruins in the four corners region of the Country. In 1976 Richard met up with the Bike-centennial group in Astoria Oregon to bicycle to the east coast. Richard led a full and interesting life. He was a kind, trustworthy, dependable man. Those who knew him are indeed blessed.

I am sorry to see that Dick has passed away. I haven't seen him since 1969 when he stopped by in Phoenix, on his wayu to the grand canyon. We were room mates in the Air Force, and later made two motor-scooter trips from Phoenix, then Iowa, to Mexico. In between those journeys, we worked together at a Phoenix hospital, and I can still hear and see him singing Madrigals with the head nurse and a neurosurgeon in the nurses' station of the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. I spoke with him on the pjhone in 2006, and we agreed to get together, "before it's too late." C'est la vie!

Whether chatting in the neighborhood or foraging for ramps on the woods, Richard was a source of knowledge and entertainment. We shared many interests. Allentown will be missing him.

I was incredibly sad when I learned of his passing. I was so happy to be part of his extended family! His love of the arts was inspiring. His wine and jelly were amazing, along with his beer he brought to a family reunions. He was ever so thoughtful in choosing Christmas gifts for my daughter. Claytons toy store became one of our favorites. He was a well traveled and talented man! Rest in peace Rich.

I am shocked to learn of Richard's passing. I only just met him this year, when he joined the Friends of Harmony Barbershop chorus, but he seemed like an interesting fellow. I had wondered why he didn't attend the last couple of rehearsals, and more than once I thought of giving him a call to find out if he was okay. RIP Richard-- I wish we had gotten a chance to know you better.

My deepest condolences to his family and his many friends. I had the honor of working alongside Richard at Roswell and he was one of the nicest, most kind hearted and interesting people I've ever known. He will be missed and I'll always remember him fondly. Rest in peace...
