Sofia, Rita Ann (nee Panzarella)

At the age of 95, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2025 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. She is survived by her children, Jill (Frank) Meilander of San Diego, CA; Mark (Jeannette) of Plainwell, MI; Gary (Donna) of Redondo Beach, CA; Beth (James) McDonald of Crystal Beach, Ontario; she was blessed with eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Peter J. Sofia, her son, Peter J. (Tanya) Sofia, MD, her siblings Agnes (Daniel) Guliano, Joseph (Marilyn), and Sara Panzarella. Rita was born on December 24, 1929 and raised in Buffalo, N.Y. She graduated from PS 3, and Sacred Heart Academy. She attended Bryant & Stratton Business College before her marriage in 1952. After completing 14 years out of state working with the FBI, Pete and Rita returned to Western New York, first living in Williamsville and later in East Amherst. While raising five children, Rita enjoyed working part-time for 33 years in the payroll department at Sears in the Eastern Hills Mall. Somehow over the years, they found time to tour Europe, South America and Asia. Besides her beloved Buffalo Bills, Rita's greatest passion was playing bridge well into her 80’s.
