Robert Hilburger Obituary

Hilburger,

Robert Edward

Jan 28, 1945 - Aug 31, 2025

80, passed away after a brief illness, in Buffalo, New York-the city where he was born, raised, and spent a remarkable life defined by leadership, love and joy. Born in Buffalo, Bob demonstrated leadership and ambition from a young age. As a student at Kenmore East High School, he served as President of the Teenage Republican Club. His entrepreneurial spirit emerged early, delivering the Courier Express newspaper. What began as a single route quickly expanded into several, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in business. Bob pursued higher education at Erie Community College and the University at Buffalo. In 1965, he began what would become a distinguished 29-year tenure at Tripifoods. Starting as an Assistant Buyer, Bob rose steadily through the ranks to ultimately lead the company as President. His strategic vision and dedication also earned him a seat on the Tripifoods Board of Directors, where he served for a decade. After his time at Tripifoods, Bob continued to share his expertise with the Oneida Nation as Director of New Business Development, leading C-store strategy initiatives. Even after stepping away from executive roles, Bob remained active in the industry, continuing union negotiations on behalf of Tripifoods. Throughout his distinguished career, he served on many boards including the Philip Morris National Advisory Council, DJ Mead and the Buffalo Food Bank. Bob proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a chef-a role in which he was praised for his culinary talents. In 1966, Bob married Jill Hurley, the love of his life. Together they shared 59 years of marriage filled with laughter, love, and unwavering companionship. Bob had an especially close relationship with his son Marty; the two were not only best friends, but also neighbors. They shared daily meals, movie nights, and episodes of Jeopardy with Jill by their side. Bob's daughter Barbara Waite (Patrick Snow) and his cherished grandchildren-Aidan, Dillon, and Fiona Waite-were also at the center of his world. He was endlessly proud of each of them and cherished the time they spent together in Saratoga Springs. He is also survived by his niece, Breann VanFleet of California, the daughter of his late brother, with whom he shared a close bond. He is predeceased by his father Bob, mother Norma, and brother Tommy. Outside of work and family, Bob lived life with a true zest for enjoyment. He loved playing golf, blackjack, and bridge; visiting casinos; traveling the world; cruising to Caribbean destinations like Cozumel and the Bahamas; attending concerts; camping; hosting his annual Rib Roast; meeting celebrities; and riding his Harley Davidson along scenic waterfronts. A lifelong music lover, Bob found joy and energy in every note. Above all, Bob Hilburger will be remembered as a passionate, generous, and vibrant man who lived life to the fullest. He was a respected local business leader with sharp acumen, a devoted husband and father, a loyal friend, and a loving grandfather-someone who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A Memorial Gathering will be held at C. Mertz and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 911 Englewood Ave. on Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 12 PM to 3 PM with a brief Service to immediately follow at 3 PM. All are welcome to join a Celebration of Life Dinner at 4pm at Divito's (formerly Fanara's) at 3347 Delaware Ave. Please share condolences at mertzfh.com

I have very fond memories of Bob during my time spent at Tripifoods. Bob helped guide and mentor me and that helped me immensely during my post Tripifoods career. I am sad to read of his passing and extent condolences to his family.
