Samuel Dautch Obituary

Dautch, Samuel E. "Sandy" PhD, LPC, NCC

Jun 12, 1935 - Jan 16, 2025

Passed away peacefully at his home in Lawrenceville, GA, aging out at 89 years old. He was born to Israel and Mildred Dautch in Buffalo, NY; and had two sisters, Barbara Holender and Ellen Schaeffer (both deceased). Sandy graduated from Bennet High School in 1953 and attended Syracuse University as a member of Zeta Beta Tau before joining the United States Marine Corp. Years later he completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Buffalo (1969), followed by a Masters in Counseling at Arizona State University (1970) and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education at Florida State University (1972). A Summer Quarter position at Troy State University in Montgomery Alabama, turned into a 25-year career there teaching counseling courses, culminating at retirement as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Counseling and Human Development, all while managing a part-time private practice. Sandy was married for 60 years to his best friend, Carole; and had one son, Thomas who passed away at the age of 48 leaving his wife, Laura J. Johns, Ph.D. behind. Sandy enjoyed playing golf bridge and reading fiction. Although not a musician, he loved music and the Atlanta Symphony and Chorus. Classical music and cool jazz were a constant in the home. Sandy and Carole were enamored by watching drum and bugle corps performances in the late 1970's and attended 27 DCI Championships until the activity was moved indoors. In 1960, with Michael and Molly Terry they founded Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps in Montgomery, Alabama. Their son Tom was an original Southwind member and went on with his music interest to earn a BA in Music Education and join the drum line at Auburn University. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Thomas E. Dautch Memorial Scholarship for the Auburn University Marching Band. Checks can be mailed to the Auburn University Foundation (Attn: Thomas E. Dautch Memorial Fund) at 317 College Street, Auburn, AL 36849.

Sandy was one of my professors in the nineties and had kept in touch over the years. I saw this a few days ago and was shocked. Sandy was a friend and mentor. His presence will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear about Sandy's passing today. Although we didn't really know each other, Sandy and my dad were very close as were Sandy's parents as well as Sandy's siblings.

Sincerely,

Jim Ehrenreich
