I was fortunate enough to be a teammate of Tyler's when we played for Orchard Park High School. Aside from being one of the best hockey players I've shared the ice with, Tyler was one of the most genuine, fun, and personable teammates I've ever had in any sport. To the Matthews family:
I never knew Tyler personally but as a Niagara grad and hockey fan I came to know him from a distance over TV and radio. It was very easy to become an impassioned follower of such a fine young man whose spirit, skills and determination became contagious though I live hundreds of miles away. I am so sorry for your loss and I know no words can comfort but will share a poem from Van Dyke entitled Gone from My Sight
Gone From My Sight

Gone where?

That is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at that moment when someone at my side says: There, she is gone! there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: Here she comes!

Although I only knew Tyler for a few years as classmates at Niagara, I was very deeply saddened to hear of his passing. His genuine smile, laugh, and friendliness were truly contagious and could brighten the room; these will not be forgotten. It was a privilege to be able to know and work with him.
