Carolyn Harken Hackwell Obituary

JESUP – Carolyn J. (Mumm) Harken Hackwell, 84, of Jesup, Iowa, died Monday, February 5, 2024, at her home following a sudden illness.
Funeral Services were 10:30 a.m. – Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church in Jesup. Burial will be 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 11 at Cedar Crest Cemetery in Jesup.
Visitation was 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 9 at White Funeral Home, Jesup, and continued for an hour before services, Saturday, at the church.
Carolyn Jean Mumm was born June 8, 1939, in rural Ainsworth, Iowa, the daughter of Barclay William Mumm and Gertrude Eva (Bell) Mumm. Carolyn attended school in Williamsburg, Iowa, until her family moved to rural Buchanan County when she was a freshman. At Jesup, she was voted homecoming queen and graduated with the Jesup High School Class of 1957. On August 23, 1958, she was united in marriage to Merle D. "Butch" Harken at the First Presbyterian Church in Jesup. They made their home in Waterloo, and Carolyn worked at Rath Packing before being employed by Waterloo Savings Bank. In 1960, they moved into Jesup and lived next door to Butch's parents, Isbrandt and Gertrude Harken. Butch's job with Hurst Plumbing and Excavating took the couple to Washington D.C., where they lived for several years, before moving back to the area to tend to Butch's health. He preceded her in death March 4, 1996.
While Butch was alive, the couple loved to travel. They would travel to Florida for the Daytona 500; to Branson, Mo., many times; and the many Mumm fishing trips. They loved the racing community and enjoyed going to the races. They were even able to be extras in the 1968 movie, "Fever Heat," which was filmed in Iowa.
On March 18, 2000, Carolyn married Dale Hackwell at the First Presbyterian Church in Jesup. They made their home in Jesup, and Carolyn continued to be active in the community. She attended countless city council meetings, was appointed to the board of adjustments and was a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church. Her frugal way of life and strong attention to detail served her well over the years. She loved gardening, canning salsa, and watching sports of all kinds. She loved being with her family and friends and enjoyed the role of hostess. She liked to take care of people and often joked that she, "…should have been a nurse, instead of a banker!"
Carolyn is survived by her husband, Dale Hackwell of Jesup; one daughter, Debra (David) Jacobs of Independence; one grandson, Nicholas (Melanie) Jacobs of Winthrop; one brother, Donald (Carole) Mumm of Independence; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Mumm of Plymouth, Mass. and, Karen (Roxie) Mulnix of Independence; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her step-children: Sherie (Doug) Firgard of Hudson and Pamela Hackwell of Waterloo, and Dale (Beth) Hackwell, Jr. of Washburn; as well as step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Merle "Butch" Harken; two brothers, LeRoy (Mary) Mumm and Ronald Mumm; one step-child, Kim Hoppock; and one step-grandchild, Jimmie Dale Hoppock.
Memorials may be directed to the Jesup Ambulance Association, Jesup American Legion Post 342 or to the Independence American Flag Fund, established at BankIowa.
