Daniel Bonefas Obituary

INDEPENDENCE – Daniel R. Bonefas, 75, of Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at his home.
Visitation was held from 4 until 7 p.m. on Monday, February 24, 2025, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence. A Memorial Service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 25, at the funeral home.
Dan was born on December 5, 1949, in Independence, the son of William "WJ" and June E. (Temeyer) Bonefas. Dan grew up in rural Winthrop, Iowa, the sixth of thirteen children. He attended the East Buchanan Community Schools and in 1968 graduated from Independence High School and started working at Corn Blossom in Independence. On July 29, 1967, he married Norma J. Kimmerle at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence. Dan began working in the Insurance industry, first with Farm Bureau Insurance and later started Bonefas Insurance and Real Estate, before retiring in 2014.
Dan was active in the Independence community as a member of the Jaycee's and served several terms on the Independence City Council. He was a long-time member of the Wapsipinicon Country Club where he also served as board president. Dan served several terms as a board member and board president for Readlyn Mutual Insurance. When he wasn't working, he could be found on the golf course.
He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up and supported their many activities while also finding time to winter in Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Bonefas, Independence; two sons, Daniel J. (Sarah) Bonefas, Des Moines, Iowa, and Jeff (Angie) Bonefas, Independence; three grandchildren: Will (West Des Moines, Iowa), Brynn, and Jacob Bonefas (both of Independence); seven siblings: Mary (Ron) Besler, Boone, Iowa, Wanda Childress, Iowa City, Iowa, Virginia (Steve) Doan, Independence, Ken (Terry) Bonefas, Connecticut, Steve (Vickie) Bonefas, Independence, Ed (Nancy) Bonefas, Shenandoah, Iowa, and Anthony Bonefas, Waterloo, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents, WJ and June Bonefas; four brothers: Richard, Jim, Bill, and Paul Bonefas; and a sister, Sue Butler.
