INDEPENDENCE – Floyd Engler, 79, of Independence, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, due to a battle with cancer.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 19, at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. Burial will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
Floyd was born August 17, 1946, to Fred and Caroline (Handke) Engler at their rural farm home in Clayton, Iowa. Floyd started school at Garnavillo Community School. He attended there through 3rd grade. In March of 1955 Floyd's parents purchased a farm one mile east of Randalia, Iowa. He continued his education at Randalia Community School which consolidated to West Central School District from which he graduated from in 1964. From high school Floyd worked at United Farm Tool in Oelwein, Iowa.
In Spring of 1965 Floyd met Jane Davis of Strawberry Point, Iowa at the Coliseum Ballroom, Oelwein. Floyd and Jane continued to date and on September 2, 1967, they were married. From this loving marriage were born a son, Steve, and a daughter, Constance (Connie). They made their home in Oelwein. In May of 1969 Floyd was given the opportunity to work for Red's Body Shop in Independence. In June of 1971 Floyd and his family moved to a new home in Independence. In 1981 Floyd and Don Magsamen purchased the body shop from Red and continued in business as Independence Body Shop and in 1993 Floyd and Don built a new body shop building currently as Hilltop Motors Inc, Independence. In January 2007, Floyd sold his share of Hilltop Motors Inc to his partner Don Magsamen. Floyd continued with hauling salvage vehicles from Chicago, Illinois to points in Iowa. In November 2015 Floyd fully retired and sold his semi-truck car hauler.
Floyd enjoyed motorcycling and being with family and friends. Floyd was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, was on the church council, Endowment Committee, Call Committee and he also helped with church service duties.
Floyd is survived by his wife Jane Engler; daughter Connie Fernandes; granddaughter, Grey Engler; sisters, Marian Roeder and Joyce Barker; and many nieces and nephews.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Caroline Engler; brother and sister-in-law, Duane and Phyllis Engler; infant brother, Jordan Lee Engler; and son; Steve Engler.
